_ yln lotva Idea . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 7 February 1902

_ yln lotva Idea . EY cutting down the legal width of roads throughout the state an Iowa legislator proposes to add 500 , 000 acres to the tillable area of that commonwealth . This means a capital asset of $ 25 , 000 , 000 to be presented to the farmers of the Hawkeye state , giving them a strip Of land 240 . 000 miles long and sixteen feet Wide or 500 , 000 acres which at $ 50 makes $ 25 , 000 , 000 . The project is by no means chimerical , and if carried into effect the example plight well be emulated in Illinois and other sections of the corn belt , where com land is rapidly passing the $ 100 mark . Main thoroughfares may consistently tie kept at a uniform width of sixty-six feet , but there are thousands of miles of minor roadways in the level sections , vrhere cuttings are unknown , that would eervethe purpose equally as well if reduced to forty feet in width . The average country road raises a goodly crop of weeds and the land would toe better in corn or pasture .

As we are getting letters from the boys and girls and mothers as well as fathers , it looks as if all members of the family were interested in the paper . We have a great lot of nice letters from tlie young folks . . It makes up for a lot of hard work to Ixave the boys and girls take an interest in the paper .

Kansas Wheat Htt Hard . -. _ - [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 7 February 1902

Kansas Wheat Htt Hard . -. _ - ^ ffJilTE favorable meterological ^ oaditiqhai ILA J this year Kansas will have ~ a bumper ; corn crop . Last fall an immense area was sown to vrheat . Dry and cold weather will necessitate plowing up most of this , and liyherever a field of wheat has been killed ( fcorn will be substituted . But for the fact that most corn cribs fre empty , and there is plenty of stoek pith , keen appetites in the country , the tfOrn . acreage to be put in this year would tfe suggestive of low prices for that grain ^ liould the crop justify even moderate -Expectations .

Fire Proof Buildings For Iowa Fair Grounds , [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 7 February 1902

Fire Proof Buildings For Iowa Fair Grounds , *_ H Officials of the Iowa department of agriculture are opposed to putting up more temporary buildings on the state fair grounds at Dei Moines . Said John Simpson , secretary of the department : -We have seen the folly of p-attin ^ money into shacks and shanties , which not only are soon debilitated by the e . ements , but arc always subject to fire . Waiting to MaKfi a _ Pife . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 7 February 1902

Waiting to MaKfi a _ Pife . We have aU heard of the dreamy astronomer , who in gating at the stars stumbled into a well . We hare called him unpractical and laughed at him , chiefly because , in his earnest attention to the end , he forgot the intermediate distance . But do not our so-called very practical people very often commit the same blunder as the astronomer ? In fixing their steady gaze on the material result of their labors , on the accumulation , on the position gained , do they not often forget the road over which they must travel to reach the goal ? Oh , anything will do now , till I get rich , tho hustling mail says . I havent time now . Wait till I have made my pile . Then Ill enjoy good music , literature , art and social Intercourse . I must hustle now . And hustle he does Unfortunately , when he has made his pile , aa he aay * . he generally finds that his capacity to enjoy has been dolled If not destroyed .
