Jackson , of the Delaware Experiment Station recommended for combatting anthracnose of the bean the planting of clean , selected seed , uge of uninfected land , cultivation when dry and spraying with a 5-4-50 Bordeaux mixture . He said plant diseases are not inherited but there may be predisposing tendencies , to combat which efforts are being made by plant breeders . E . H . Dollar , of Heuvelton , N . IPOILTRYAND BEESI PROTECTING BEES IN SPRING . All hives made nowadays have a three-eighths Inch entrance the width of the hive . Generally the bottom boards are made reversible so the other side will give a seven-eighths Inch entrance . That Is a good thing for thehot summer months , but in early spring even the three-eighths inch size must be contracted . Por weak colonies an entrance only large enough to allow the bees to pass through is best . Those of moderate strength require about three-eighths by three inches . Some hive manufacturers send entrance blocks with the hives . They do not , however , suit me , and I have invented an entrance contractor in one piece and with which three different sizes can be given the bees . It is made of a piece of wood one inch thick , from one and one-half to two inches high and long enough to go between the bars of the bottom board—on which the hive rests .
