Clothespins put in an ordinary grape basket and suspended from the tine by a wire hook will be found convenient It is easy to move the basket along as you hang the clothes and it is also out of the way . For the sake of economy sheets of brown paper may be used instead of felt , and they make an admirable substitute . . It is difficult to get coal that does not clinker . These clinkers may be easily removed by putting an oyster shell occasionally in the stove when the fire is burning brightly . The fumes arising from the oyster shell clean off the bricks . To remove rust from flatirons , rub them with a little warm grease and wrap them ...

FARMERS' CLUBS [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 November 1908

FARMERS CLUBS In a short ride by train into a neighboring state , I saw scores of farmers at the -several railway stations and still many more at the adjacent corners of streets and in front of stores . They were occupied , as it appeared , in conversation only ; but being a farmer myself , I knew better than to identify them with the village lounger . Farmers , like the rest of mankind , are social beings . They are compelled , by the nature of their work , to be much alone . The . day in town gives them almost their only opportunity to meet their neighbors socially and exchange views on subjects which are uppermost in the farmers mind . ; . As a class , they do not patronize the liquor shops . They are • too proud to loaf in the busy stores and take up the time and floor space of the merchant . What the farmer should have is a social and business headquarters in every town—a farmers club— and the town should supply it . The merchants association , at trifling expense , could provi...

THE FARMERS'FORUM [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 November 1908

I have had a little experience in fighting the oystershel ! bark louse and I find it is a hard customer . Last season two prominent men living as neighbors in our village called my attention to the shade trees in front of their residences . These trees , I found upon examination , were covered with the oyster shell bark scale . They were black ash trees and seven in number . They were of from fifteen to twenty years growth . Three of these trees were co rered with the scale on the trunk and out to the extreme ends of the branches . Many of the limbs had died owing to the sap having been sucked out by this little scale louse . ...

FREE SAMPLE OF A ROOFING [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 November 1908

FREE SAMPLE OF A ROOFING Farmers who are buying ready roofings on the strength of the appearance of a sample often overlook the important feature of the density of materials . The densest roofing on the market is Amatite ; that is , it has the most stuff packed into it for its thickness . Amatite could , no doubt , have been made twice as thick without using any more materials to the square foot , but it will then be more porous and more open to the penetration of air and water . Instead of that , Amatite is pressed under great rollers till it is as tough and dense as it can be made . The weight per roll tells the story . Investigate this before you buy . Full information and sample will be sent in reply to a postal addressed to the nearest office of the Barrett Manufacturing Company , New York , Chicago , Cleveland , Allegheny , Kansas City , St . Louis , Minneapolis , Philadelphia , New Orleans , Boston and Cincinnati .

THE FAMfcRSFIRESIDE AT FOURSCORE . His body , warped and brown and thin , Is like some quaint old violin , Played till it bears the lasting trace Of the dead player s hand and facePlayed to old airs of loveMjnd pain Till il has broken with the strain . But even yel , when some one brings A waster touch , the poor worn strings Woke , from his heart of bygone years , A music that is blind with tears . —Charles Buxton Going , in Everybody * Magazine . AN EDUCATED DOG It is seldom that we hear of a more wonderful dog than the Roger described by his owner in the Century Magazine . And-there is a very good hint for our aspiring animal trainers HI the note which this successful trainer gives when he says he had been simply getting the cards of which I thought . Just try fixing your undivided attention upon -whatever you want your dog to do and watch the results . To be sure they may / not all be Rogers . This writer says : I resolved to teach him to spell his name . I drew the letters of t...
