Rookwood Farm Offering . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 November 1910
Rookwood Farm Offering . We take pleasure in calling the attention of our readers to the advertisement of C . F . Curtiss , Ames , Iowa , found on another page in this issue . Mr . Curtiss is offering Berkshires by either of his great herd boars , Rival s Champion s Best or Rookwood Champion . Rivals Champion s Best is probably well known to our readers as he is considered one of the coming sires of the breed . He was exhibited at the American Berkshire Congress Show at DesMoines , but was off his feed two or three days before the show and was not in proper show condition and was placed second in the Junior Yearling class . If he had been in the same conditon that he was previous to the show , this decision would doubtless have been reversed . Rival s Champion s Best is the son of the noted Rival s Champion and litters by him should be very valuable . Rookwood Farm is also offering Scotch Shorthorns for sale . They . have at the head of the herd , Imported British Glory , a son of P...

From An Old Breeder [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 November 1910
From An Old Breeder BY GEO . W . BERRY , TOPEKA , KAN You do not notice that a thing is different until it is contrasted with something that is different . * .. * .. * In order that the value of anything can be appreciated it must he compared with something of lesser or greater value . Progress . Showing at the fairs is a great experience school . How often does the breeder on going to the fair find that what appeared to him at home as invincible looks different in comparison with others . The light showing of Berkshires at the Western State Fairs has been a subject of general comment . The best reason that has been offered for the small number of Berkshires shown on the State Fair circuit is that the breeders have sold down closely to meet the demand for breeding stock . The present demand for Berkshires is unparalleled in the history of the breed . In view of the shortage of hogs and the upward incline in prices of pork products , the demand for breeding stock can not be overtaken...

UNKNOWN [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 November 1910
Separator and Conservation Just now we are hearing a great deal about the conservation of the forest , the soil and the rivers ; in fact every resource that Nature has provided for sustaining human life must be conserved lest it shall be totally consumed and the race be left destitute . Of all these—the conservation of soil fertility is unquestionably the most important . At a glance it may seem a far cry from the hand separator to the conservation of soil fertility . The two go hand in hand . The old custom of marketing milk was to skim it upon the farm by crude shallow pan system . This kept all the feed at home . So far as the system went it would have been satisfactory were it not for the great loss of butter-fat that occurred . Following this , the plan of sending the milk and the butter-fat away from home was accepted . This worked very well when lands were new and feeds were not so necessary on the farm but today every article of feed must be kept for the use of the farm if t...

It is the power of doing things . Maybe , though , you find Affability a strange word of which you do not know the meaning , By the way , the dictionary is a good book to use . If you wish to enlarge your stock of words , so that yau can read intelligently and express your thoughts well , make frequent use of the dictionary . Never pass over a word without learning its meaning . Look it up in the big Word-Book . See how it is used in a sentence . Then use it yourself at the first opportunity . Study all about the word . You will find your fund of knowledge growing at a surprising rate . I really believe it would be time well spent to read the dictionary through . The story would not hang together very well , but it would . 1 be very profitable reading . All good speakers and writers are dilligent students...
Mr . McCue Not There , [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 November 1910
Mr . McCue Not There , Sev . eral papers published the fact that Mr . C . A . McCue , Auxvasse , Mo ., was an exhibitor at the Sedalfa State Fair , but was not in the money . We are just in receipt of a letter from Mr . McCue in which he states that neither he nor his hogs attended the Pair , or there would have been a different report . Circumstances kept him at home . Mr . McCue states that he has the best under six months herd that n e has ever seen and if he could have been at the Sedalia Fair with this herd they would certainly have been way up in the money . He has two Cock Robin boars and four sows that are Lulas and the best that he has ever seen and Mr . McCue has been in the business a great many years .
