The week before New Year was one of fogs and rains,-wretched as those the English grumble about. The last day of the year closed in a heavy rain, which cleared in the evening, in the most amiable way. Watchers that night were startled by a sudden vehement din breaking the soft air, but the next minute smiled--" it is three quarters past eleven I" Every fire bell in the city was to be struck at once at .midnight, and the church chimes were to begin a quarter of an hour before. But the impatient sons of liberty had caught the first peal as a signal to begin their own private rejoicings in their own way, and they literally "made things hum." The steamers sounded their whistles and fog horns, and every fre, factory, and church bell swung recklessly. It was impossible to distinguish anything ; the air was fall of a loud humming, in w...

There was little need of invahlid going to Florida. But the north-west wind brought clear and bracing weather that makes life a luxury. With all the warm, unfavorable weeks, the season is far from being an unhealthy one, the death rate for the week being considerably less than the corresponding one last winter. The Fryer Prgcess. From the Mining and Scientific Press. So much interest has been manifested in the Fryer process of working ores, and so much anxiety to learn the details, that we take pleasure in presenting to our readers this week a detailed description and en graving of the furnace used in the prelim inary stages of the process. This will be followed in duo time by a full description of the whole method, with illustrat i o n s showing the details of the other machin ery, all of which is novel and different from what has here tofore been in use. The publication of this description, with the drawing of the furnaoe, is advisable in consequence of the false impression con veyed by the publica tion of what purports to be an abstract of Fryer's first patent. We corrected this er roneous impressi o n in our last issue, and those interested can be convinced by ex amining the boxes of ore in the different stages of the process now at our editorial rnnmc In order that our readers may lea...
