Cz) he gattjj gMtonnn. ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 11, 1685 AMERICAS WOODEN SHIPS VER SUS ENGLISH IRON. Under tbe above caption, a recent number of the Boston Journal gives tbe follewing: Senator Beck of Ken tucky, a state where ships of any kind are never seen, took it upon himself in a recent speech to speak of En glish iron ships as fine sailing ships, and American as "miserable old wooden sailing crafts." It is very ev ident that tbe Kentucky senator was speaking upon a subject of which he bad little knowledge, and therefore the sentiment of patriotism, if noth ing else, should have restrained him from indulging in a fling at our snip ing interest Undoubtedly the best, and in fact about the only chance we have to compare the respective merits of American and English ships, is that afforded in the grain trade of tbe Pacific coast from San Francisco. An elaborate state ment, covering two years' export of grain from San Francisco to Eng land, employing 237 American wooden s...

W Slw Sattjj staratt. ASTORIA, OREGON: THURSDAY- FEBRUARY 11, 16S3 BOTCinVORK. To the ordinary mind it is difficult to see what good can come from the present efforts at legislation in Salem. Some of the measures seem idiotic. Let us glance at a few that because they are likely to pass are thus em phasized in their idiocy. Wait's bill to "prevent" carrying concealed weapons has passed. The "preven tion" consists in making any one who wants to carry a revolver pay a li cense of $2.50 a year. That is all the credentials required. This is now the law, and a more ridiculous meas ure never passed the legislature of any American commonwealth. Another proposes the establish ment of two normal schools. A nor mal school would be a grand thing provided it were attainable. As mat. ters now stand, a normal school is one of the unattainable luxuries by reason of lack of necessary endow ment. But the precious bill intro duced by Leo establishes two "normal" schools. A "normal school' when establi...

W hc gnitjj storiait. ASTORIA, OREGON: I'HIDAY FEHRUAKY IS. 16S3 IX THE SOUDAX. Aiii eyes are turned to the conflu ence ol the "White and Blue Nile where in the city of Khartoum El Mahdi, flushed with victory, is sur rounded by a horde of fanatics. The f. all of Khartoum created more ex citement in London than the attempt of the dynamiters to blow up the houses of parliament. Party spirit runs even higher in England than in this country, and when the news of the English reverse and the death of Gordon in the desert was told in London there were not wanting Tory leaders to exult at hearing of the de defeat Among that party the name of Gladstone is execrated. Upon his head falls the force of the disaster. He was urged to send an expedi tion to Khartoum as early as June whon the Kile was in a navigable state up to Khartoum. It was not until August 5th that the nesessary appropriations were made for the ex pedition, and it was not until the middle of that mouth that the expedition start...

In response to a resolution of theJ federal senate the secretary of the in iorior has submitted a communica tion in regaid to the proposed open ing to settlement of lands in the In dian territory ceded to the United States by Indians for the use of In dians and of freemen. This has reference to the affair of the Oklahoma boomers, whi ih has oc casioned considerable annoyance and expenso to the government. The re pent surrender of the insubordinates to General Hatch is by no means an assurauce that the trouble is at an end. rj Itc gattj forimt. ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY. FEBRUARY 15, 1SS5 WOMAX SrFFIiA GE. A vigorous effort in behalf of wom an suffrage is being made at this session of the legislature. The ad vocates of the measure argue that the legislature can grant the suffrage right to women, if it sees fit so to do, by direct legislation. The opponents of the movement say that the fact that the proposed constitutional amendment was overwhelmingly beaten last June is sufficient argu ment against immediate considera tion of the measure. The judiciary committee of the slate senate has been listening to ad dresses from different advocates, finally reporting back the bill with out recommendation. The argument that the advocates of the measure make at this time is substantially this: All power in this state is vested in the legislative as sembly, except such as is prohibited to it in the constitution of the United States or this state. The state constitution contains this provisien: "In all elections not o...
