NO BURIALS ALIVE. A Medleal Journal aay Such Storlcii Aro Unfounded. Very comforting nows la brought to those who stand in dally droad ot being buried alive. Tho current numbor of the Medical and Surgical Reporter says: "The fear of boing buried alive haunts the minds of so many of our fellow men that it may hardly bo rogardod b strange, in some respects, that it was re cently reported that a number of physi cians in a city near Philadelphia had banded themselves together to devise means to prevent such a catastrophe in their own caso. And, when physicians could tako such measures In view of a supposed danjror. it is not remarkablo that the community should have a special and exaggerated horror of being burled alive. But this horror is as with out reason as is the timidity of the phy sicians referred to. There seems to bo no good ground whatever for supposing that it is possible in this enlightened age for any person to bo committed to the grave whllo yet living. Stonos re porting s...

SOME CERTAIN SYMPTOMS. LIFE FROM DEATH. Benefactions from the Dead as Illustrated by the Egyptians. A package of peas was once found in a fold of the wrappings of an Egyp tian mummy, where it had lain undis turbed 3,000 years. The peas were at once soaked in tepid water and after words planted. They soon germinated, grew finely, and produced a good crop. It will bo remembered that at various times kernels of wheat have been found in the wrapping cloths of mummies, which, on being planted, have grown and flourished finely. The above facts teach us a very in tersting lesson regarding the Egyp tians of tho years far, far back ; it is this: Their religion taught them to provide for tho continuance of the fruits of the earth in remote times, bo that the blessings of God might be made manifest to man as well through the bounties of nature as in the "growth of the spirit. And thus thoy made uso of death for the trans mission of the germs of life to ages in the incalculable future, for they knew that tho repose o...

. THE ETHICS OF SUICIDE. & Jiyiterlous Inconsistency Tho Animal Kingdom 3Ioral Cotrardlco. A very mysterious inconsistency In human naturo lies in tho contrast be tween life which makes self preservation its first love, and that utter contempt and intolerance of it which induces self de struction. By all human laws, tho man who takes another's life in defending his own is held guiltless of murder; his deed is accounted justifiable in recognition of the self saving instinct with which the creator has accompanied the gift of lifo to all his creatures. With the earliest consciousness of young animals this in stinct appears in timidity and shrinking from danger, real or imaginary; and down to tho lowest order of beings, a wounded thing will exert its last strength to escape having its existence blotted out. As for tho human species, wo have it on Scripture authority that "all that a man hath will he give for lib life." In view of this, who that is unaware of tho facts would expect t...

The Effects of Over Activity. l)r. Sawyer remarks that full exerciso of the brain is favorable to health and longevity, and that prolonged brain work is not necessarily injurious when unat tended by hurry, anxiety or excitement. The young and strong havo an overplus of nerve force, but when the nerve capi tal is small the effect of over activity is an ,. immediate danger. Tho carrying of business cares and worriments over night is a drain on tho nervous system. Occupations requiring keen, continued alertness, like that of locomotive engi neers and bank tellers, are extremely wearing. The nerve strain on specula tors is obvious. The excitement of poli tics wrecks some men. A very monot onous occupation exercises but one part 6f""the brain, and that excessively. "Thus the bookkeeper, dealing with figures and nothing but figures year after year, becomes tired, listless, inelastic and finally incapable of work. A vaca tion trip to the seaside or the mountains benefits him immensely, par...
