E JAKE, THE FAKMEK'S BOY. JaVje went whistling along the road On hie way home from work. He had been plowing in the corn field. It was a glorious evening in September—seed ing time. Such an autumny evening as could only be found among the hills of Ohio. The sun had sunk be low the horizon, but with his expiring rays had beautifully decorated the heavens with blended shades of pur ple and gold. Jake sat astride his old gray mare contented and happy. "The field will be ready for the har row day after to-morrow," he solilo quized, "then the next day I will com mence drilling, and finish it Saturday. Whoop la!" Again the whistling min gled merrily with the jingling of the chains attached to the plow harness. Jake's blue shirt was soiled with perspiration and dust. A portion of the crown of his hat was gone, mak ing an aperture through which peeped his—I wish I could say blonde hair— but it was sandy, very sandy. His hands and face were sunburned and rough, while his feet hanging...

He has just returned from settling a fire loss with •ome of the Methodist brethren in a I)a kota town afflicted with the prohibition movement. He went to the brother's houBe who had suffered by the fire, 'and found Mr. and Mrs. Smith at jome with a long schedule of losses made out, such as "One silk dress, $95 "One feather mattrcw, $25," etc.. etc. Brother and Sister Jones had called over to assist Brother and Bist^r^mith in the settle ment, and the fqur sat primly by, waiting for Mr. England to proceed. He put a few questions as to tbe value of the silk dre9s and the feather mattress, which were ably answered by Sister Jones for Sister Smith, who snapped out: "Why, Mrs. Smith's dress was the nicest one in our congregation and if 'twas mine 1 wouldn't take twice $95 far it." •it,-? I V'^ M£ iU P&S. t-j I 1 $fee &$ KELLOGG fe TUCKER, Publishers. JAMESTOWN, DAKOTA. Henry Ward Beecher has been sick in England and was compelled to cancel some of his lecture engage ments. Two parents by the evening fire: The red light fell about their knees On heads that rose by slow degrees Like buds upon the lily spire. O patient life! 0 tender strife! The two sat still together there, The red light shone about their knees But all the heads by slow degrees Had gone and left that lonely pair. 0 voyage fast! O lonely past! The red light shone upon the floor And made the space between them wide They drew their chairs up side by s...
