li 1P IN ;D AD'VENTURE. An Exlting Briae. N the little town aof Oakland lives Ida Record, a .pretty schoolteach er, who recently ran a race to the land office ,With Jim fMcVey, of the same place, beaiting him by a frac tion of a second, but beating him all the same, to the'delight of her friends, jays the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. * Miss Record has been the teacher for -several years in the village nestled among the Ozarks. Just off the bank. of the picturesque White River. The President of the village had succeeded by hard work and many privations in building a substantial schoolhouse. For convenience the teacher lived in a small log house adjacent, with her -widowed mother and little sister. There never would have been any question as to the rights of the village in occupying the bit of ground where the schoolhouse is located had it not been for the recent mineral excitement throurhout th;s entire country. This was tile incentive which induced the people to look closely to their o...

A FIRE SY.JACK LONDON. OR land travel or seafaring the w orld over a companion is ,usually considered desirable. In the Klondike, as Tom Via e toned out, such a companion is ab Cltaly essential. But he found it out, tafby precept, but through bitter ex 'TNever travel alone," is a precept of the' north. He had heard it many times and laughed, for he was a strap ping young fellow, big boned and big muscled, with faith in himself and in the strength of his head and hands. It was on a bleak January day when the experience came that taught him respect for the frost and for the wis dom of the men who hadbattled with it. He had left Calumet Camp on the Yukon with a light pack on his back. to go up Paul Creek to the divide be tween it and Cherry Creek. where his party was prospecting and hunting moose. The frost was sixty degrees below zero, and he had thirty miles of lonely trail to cover, but he did not mind. In fact he -enjoyed it, *swinging along through the silence, his blood pounding ...

•w* Ieaveis Fell After That Smantha Wilson Never Said the Words Again, We suppd e. 'LL never speak to Elvira Smith again till the heavens fall!" Mrs. Wilson declared hotly. "Well. S'mantha, if you wait till that happens, you're likely to wait long time," remarked her hus band, laithing, and winking at Elvira Smith's hnsbaf6l, who said, apologetically: "Vira didn't' mean to disappoint ye, Mis' Wilson. She's kinder forgetful, and when Mis' Lambert sent over to borry 'em, she let the frames go, never rememberin' she'd promised 'em to you.' "She didn't want to remember! Mrs. Lambert don't live in a dug out. It's easy for some folks to forget their poor neigh bors; specially if they've got rich ones to toady to." Mrs. Wilson cut her words out sharply with emphasis. Mr. Smith flushed a little, but letting the unpleasant insinuation go, answered mildly: "Seems to me you'n Vira's been frien's too long to let such a little thing as that make trouble 'tween ye."
