44 A liasly philo of Soup. Having published the correspondence between (7cn cr.il Scott and the War Department, we should have been content to suffer him to drop quietly into that insignificance to which his own weakness has con signed him. True friendship towards Gen. Scott would have dictated such a course, to say nothing of the tenderness with which even the errors of those who have done the State some service, should be regarded by every citizen. Such, however, does not seem to be the opinion of the Whig Editors of this State. With out giving their readers the opportunity of judging of den. Scott s merits or dements, in his controversy ,'ith the Government, by the publication of the cor respondence, tlicy arc generally laboring to produce fule impressions by the grossest misrepresentations. ßnmtiij-Ninil) Congress. Speech of 31 r. Bcnton, OF MISSOURI, In Senate, Miy?$, 1540 On the Oregon question. ( Concluded. J It wis in the year 1301 that McKenzie made this proposition to the British government. That govern ment never ventured to act upon the proposition until after the joint occupation treaty of ViVi. Uefbrc that, iU ministers hero hinted vague claims, but refused to write them down, or to-sign them. After that con vention, and especially after its renewal in and after the disappearance of our people from the Colum bia under the power and policy of the Hudson Bay Company, then the government took the decisive stand, and went the whole length of McKenzie' recommen dation. This is the origin of the British claim to the Columbia! Because they could not find a northwest p&rnage because the Unjigah went to the Frozen ocean because Frazcr's river was unnavigable because tho Columbia river was the only practicable line of communication with the Pacific ocean, and its b...
