IN NOVEMBER. [Newspaper Article] — The Stylus — 1 November 1895

IN NOVEMBER. Now the leaf is in the sere, And the sad and sober year Heaves a sigh, and sheds a tear For the dead September; For the summer's perfect days, Purple mists and golden haze, Pleasant walks, and woodland ways, She doth well remember : Sheds a tear, and heaves a sigh For the beauties of July, When the sea, and when the sky Is like a beryl bluest; Moans for all the roses dead, Groans for all the finches fled, Where the palm tree lifts its head, And men's hearts are truest. Sobs for berry-bearing June, When the daj's are like a tune, Like a song on the lagoon, Sung by lads and lasses ; Mourns the lilting of the lark, And the glow-worm in the dark, Gleaming like a golden spark, Mid the ferns and grasses. Now the leaf is in the sere, And the wan and yellow year Bows her head, and sheds a tear For the dead September : Sighs at thought of summer o'er, Song and laughter heard no more, Weeps at thought of winter frore Coming with December. AN ERA-MAKING CATHOLIC POET OF AMERICA. [Newspaper Article] — The Stylus — 1 November 1895

AN ERA-MAKING CATHOLIC POET OF AMERICA. When a poet receives the honor of having his verse defended and freed of a charge of bad taste, in the columns of the New York Independent , and when he is hailed by the London Spectator 1 as beginning a new era in the poetry of America, we ought, as students of letters, to manifest some curiosity about this poet; but when we learn that he is a Catholic and a priest at that, our curiosity, as members of a Catholic college, should grow into a positive desire to know the poet and everything about him. This is our reason for craving the indulgence of our readers to an article on the poems of Father John B. Tabb. We grieve, indeed, that we are unable to claim him as one of us and call him, as the Spectator does, deceived by the publisher's address, " a delicate American poet of modern Boston." Still Father Tabb is an American, and a Catholic, and a priest, and, for all that, we are glad to repeat what the Spectator says of him : "This is the first...

IN MEMORIAM. [Newspaper Article] — The Stylus — 1 November 1895

IN MEMORIAM. " Eritis Aureum Par." My brothers, mine and dear bv lot of birth, Whom not alone the purple of life's tide, But purple flowing from Christ's altar-side Made brothers by a title better worth ; The day is come for us who dwell on earth To give in alms to those dear souls who bide Within the nursing bosom of Christ's bride, And change their blessed mourning into mirth. How happy, then, I deem this lot of mine, — So kindly privileged your love to share, Indued so highly with your stole and sign, That, better gifts than gave Tobias e'er, I lay upon your burial bread and wine, The world's own ransom, large beyond compare! All Souls, 1895. ' —Sacerdos.

IS MOORE A POET? [Newspaper Article] — The Stylus — 1 November 1895

IS MOORE A POET? IN a recent number of an English periodical, the Spectator, there appeared an article discussing Tom Moore's claim to the title of poet. The writer allows the claim, and then goes on to add so many restrictions and modifications that the title appears to be conferred more through generosity than through merit. He acknowledges that Moore is considered a poet by the multitude, and that the vox populi in this case, as in every other, is correct; while, by the learned minority, Ireland's sweetest singer is set down as "quite old-fashioned and out of date." A fine specimen, indeed, of English generosity to the sister-isle! The young Englishman, returning from the University with his single eye-glass, unwieldy cane, and his roll of parchment, would never dream of including Moore among the number of literary men, whose acquaintance was worth making. If the witty hard were alive to-day, he would probablv return the compliment. According to the reviewer, there is hardly a li...

IN THE CHURCH OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. [Newspaper Article] — The Stylus — 1 November 1895

IN THE CHURCH OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. Flaming corollas round great disks of snow And silver trefoils fashioned all of light Flash out their molten petals on the night. A field of flowers! How wondrous do they blow! What splendors from their burning faces flow ! Splendors, which would unveil the statues' sight, Deceive the sculptured angels into flight, And poured thro' parting eyelids set aglow Their hearts of stone, did they not slumber deep Enraptured with the glory of the Lord, The snow-white radiance of eternity. Dream on, fixt forms; and we'll away to reap What further harvests Nature may afford And pour them at God's feet unstintingly. J. P. Fields.
