Is the Oldest Newspaper in Salem, and has a i..uch larger circulation than any other paper has ever had. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9. ?W4. l?KNir * WKHI'.JK, p?bliith?r*. For Congress?Sixth District, PETER J.IOTEY, Of Lynchburg. Nominee of the Democratic i?arty. TEE DECISION OF TUESDAY'S BALLOTS. The arbitrament of the ballot box has awarded the palm of victory to the other great political party of the country, the Republican party. The victors should remember, anil they doubtless will, that the campaign just gone was a war not deep rooted iu malice and hate; not war for its own sake; but of principles honestly espoused and fearlessly maintained ; principles cherished from regard for the best interests of this whole people, regardless of man or section. That political party whose aim and purpose is not to exert its best endeavors to the upbuilding and the prosperity of every portion of the land, has outlived its day of usefulness, and it behooves every patriot, of whatsoever political tenets...

Thanksgiving day sounds strangely sweet to every patriot and Christian ear. Hour of grateful praise for the supreme goodness of (iod, and for the strength and perpetuity of our government, and her humane laws. Institution older than the event coiniu em orated on the fourth of July; ohier than good King Arthur and his Knights ; old aw gratitude to God in the human heart, hollowed by the sweet song* of King David. Our hearts should he filled with the truest happiness and the sincerest love offerings to a merciful Providence for blessings to fatherland and to fireside. Wealth, power, empire, the glittering gems that gladden the eye of ayarice, are all made up of the vanities of our brief fitful fever here, and soon vanish, but fellowship with a forgiving Father is eternal.
