The difficult task of selecting one among 27 beauties as queen was performed by a panel of judges drawn , from the Austin area. Following the coronation Thursday evening, the queen, spon- sored by the Elgin branch of Austin Savings and Loan, was presented at the first of three rodeos held at the Lost, Pines Rodeo arena. Friday marked the beginning of the slow pitch sofibali tournament which drew teams from Smith- vffle, Austin, and Taylor as well as Elgin. Lee Gark, a delegation of nearly 75 members of and advisors to the Carcinogenesis Center, of which Dr. Clark is the president, toured the rapidly-rising lab and con- ference center complex at Buescher State Park and the animal facilities at the Camp Swift division on Saturday, July 31. Accompanied by their spouses, tne group of scientists, principally drawn from Houston, were guided around the construction Dr. Clark estimated that the permanent staff of the science park at Buescher would include 10 to 15 senior scientists, backed by assistant professors, tech- nicians, and other support personnel, bringing the resident staff to between 40 and 50. In addition to this group, researchers on six-month to one-year grants and other visiting scientists would make up a small group of short-term or transient personnel. SMITHVILLE.TEXAS 78957 Area Catholic Women Convene The La Grange Deanery Council of Catholic Women held its quarterly meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, in the parish hall of Ascension Catholic Church in Bastrop with the parish ladies as the hosts. Mrs. Alfred Till of San Marcos, president of the Austin Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, was a guest. She spoke on a number of topics pertinent to the activities of Catholic women, and assisted Mrs. Albert Crawford of Smith- ville in her report of the recent diocesan board meet- ing. Mrs. Till urged each parish to send representa- tives to a workshop which will be held in Austin On Oct. 12 conducted by "Mrs. Rose Osborne and Mrs. Pat Driscoll of California, prominent feminist ad- vocate as opposed to wom- en's lib.
