APRIL 1983 r£) ^ Southwest Chinese Journal Page 5 HAPPY EASTER By Chauncey D. Jackson What do bunnies and eggs and the church and jelly beans and new clothes and spring and the cross and lambs and 1111ies and lights all have in common? They symbolize the Celebration of Easter. Easter is a Christian festival that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the most impor- tant holy day of the Christian religion. People attend churches and take part in religious ceremonies. In most countries, Easter comes in early Spring, at a time when green grass and warm sunshine begin-to push aside the ice and snow of winter. Most Christians observe Easter on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25 (please see Easter Chart). There are numerous symbols that promote the cele- bration of Easter. Among the following are some of the more popular symbols of this festive occasion: The CROSS represents the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It has special meaning to Christians as a symbol of . Christ's vi...

TANG BY JUNE DOVE LEONG "There were 300 applicants for the opthalmology residency, for which there were only three openings," said opthalmologist Rosa A. Tang. Dr. Tang spoke with candor as she recalled to mind the competitive nature of an opthamology residency in medicine and her eventual selection as one of three doctors chosen. As one considers the screening to admit only the select few, it is little wonder that today Dr. Tang is involved in a million dollar grant, which evolves into a second phase of a research project of an addi- tional two and a half million dollars, sponsored by the National Eye Institute. Rosa A. Tang, originally from Peru, was a '74 graduate, winning first place honors from the medical school of C. Heredia University in Lima,Peru. Her China born Cantonese speaking grandparents immigrated to Peru, and her parents were born in Lima. "Oh, yes," responded Dr. Tang, "There are Chinese in Peru w...

Page 8 fct 4[L Southwest Chinese Journal APRIL 1983 PSYCHOLOGY BY WEINING C. CHANG PH D PSYCHOLOGIST FROM CULTURE SHOCK TO CULTURE INTEGRATION Dr. John King Fairbank, a noted expert on Chinese culture, was in Houston recently and I had the opportun- ity to speak with him. During our conversation there arose something interesting which I would like to share with my readers. Dr. Fairbank asked whether I was a member of the American society. I found myself hesitat- ing and then answered "yes," upon which Dr. Fairbank said, "you (the Chinese) contribute so much to the Amer- ican society!" What a thoughtful comment. He did not say; "you are Americanized" or "you are acculturated" or "assimilated." This comment, as I interpreted it, means that immigrants have brought with them their cul- tural heritage, thereby enriching the culture of the host society, and that while being part of the host so- ciety immigrants do not have to renounce their own her- itage. As immigrants ourselves, we shou...

While participating in this year's Miss Chinatown USA pageant festivities, I thought it would be fun to share some of my casual observations and comparisons of the 1973 and 1983 pageants. This year a total of 18 contestants competed for the national title, two more than in previous years. Normally, four to six of the contenders are from the city of San Francisco, but this year there were only two, as other San Francisco Bay Area cities were represented. While the judging criteria of the contestants have remained the same- talent, swim suit, personal interview/intelligence, ...

Page 10 i?7 r£] Southwest Chinese Journal APRIL 1983 AP REFLECTIONS By William Der Bing With the Space Shuttle due to liftoff from launch pad 39A at Cape Kennedy on April 4th, our community may be interested in how many Chinese Americans work at the LBJ Space Center in Houston under the civil service program. The senior member of the Chinese American contingent is Dr. Frederick S. Dawn. If one were to glance at his credentials, one wonders if he shouldn't really be in charge of this program. His specialty is in non-metal- lic materials. He is a highly educated and very experi- enced textile engineer. He is a special assistant in the Crew Systems Division. Space suits and spacecraft are his business. Eleanor L. Der Bing is the only Chinese American Wo- man supervisory Contracting Officer at The LBJ Center. The material and facilities needed to support a space flight invariable finds its way across her desk. Her skill in contract negotiations has saved the United States Government unt...

LEE, Far right, JAMES GRAHAM 1983 THE TWO FRIENDS TODAY Thirty-year friendships, one would imagine, must not be easy to keep up. The fading of youth's bloom, com- bined with the beckoning of more recent events and rela- tionships, would tend to erode a kinship lasting three decades. Yet Houston's James Graham and Albert F.M. Lee, the manager of Yank Sing Restaurant, would be the first to say that the ensuing years have been good to them and to their friendship. Uncle Sam, in the form of the U.S. Army, brought these two men of different backgrounds together. On January 29, 1953, in front of the old Army induction center on Polk Street, Graham and Lee stood first and second in line, waiting to enter our nation s armed forces during the closing stages of the Korean War. The chance encounter under the circumstance of mi itary ser-...
