COUNTRY CORRESPONDENCE. UNION, October 10. (From a Correspondent.) [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 17 October 1874

COUNTRY CORRESPONDENCE. UNION, October io. (From a Correspondent.) Your correspondent last week, in reference to Neates' battery being erected here, was evidently counting his chickens before they were hatched, or could not have been aware of the fact that Adelaide companies, or di- rectors, have never in any instance successfully carried out any arrange- ment for the Northern "Territory that they have attempted ; but on the contrary, have always so bungled and mismanaged things that now we have no confidence in them, and the less we have to do with them and they with the Northern Territory the bet- ter. Their now suddenly putting a stop to the erection of what was to have been a public crushing battery, after carting the engine and ma- chinery on the ground, is only ano- ther instance of their ignorance and incompetency to deal with gold mining matters or the Northern Ter- ritory. When claimholders on the Union and Lady Alice reefs adver- tised in July last, and were willing to giv...

LAW COURTS POLICE COURT-PALMERSTON. Tuesday, October 13. (Before Mr. E. W. Price, S.M.) Francis J. Lathlain appeared (on adjournment) to the information of J. L. Noltenius, charged with retain- ing the possession of books, «fee, the property of the Havilah and Larra- keeyah Companies. Mr. Rudall for defendant. Mr. Smith said the books now brought into Court by defendant were the books claimed by the Com- panies, in whose employ he had been ; ^4in*i there was a cheque which was never accounted for, and the retention of which, therefore, was a fraudulent appropriation. John George Kelsey said he was engaged lately as acountaut by the Havilah and Larrakeeyah Companies at Southport. The account books produced were the property of the Companies. Saw the books and papers at the Companies' store about the 10th of July last. Defendant, who was manager, then caused them to be taken away by Mr. Lewis.
