OPENING OF THE NEW SCHOOL AT ALLO&A. On Thursday last R. Macdonnell, Esq., General Inspector of Schools, visited the above enterprising town, in order to take possession or the new school just erected in connection with the Board of Education. This building has been erected by Messrs. Dougall and Dodd, from plans by Mr. B. G. Suter, of Brisbane, and is a decided useful ornament to the town. It is constructed of hardwood studding with pine chamfer boards; the former being placed on the outside, are painted a dark brown color, while the boards themselves are of a cream color, the whole having a very nice effect. The school is 30 feet long, 18 (wt wide, 11 feet high to the wall plate, and 23 feet to the ridge. The root inside is open timbered, stained and varnished; the windows also are handsomely finished in the same style. From information which bat been placed at our disposal by Mr. Towell, Telegraph master here, we are enabled to give the following particulars: The Prince was attending the Sailors' Home pionic, which took place on Thursday last, and was walking about in company with Countess JBelmore and Sir W. Manning when a cowardly ruffian went behind the Prince with a revolver in his hand, and deliberately shot him in the back. The assassin was in the act of firing another shot when a person present Knocked down his hand, and the charge took effect in the foot of a gentleman who was stand ing near. We believe that most of the pastoral tenants of the Grown on the Downs are making ar rangements for at once bringing their rum under the provisions of the Act, and »re having them divided prepara tory to the selection by the Govern ment of the half which is to be open to the public for settlement. But any one desirous of taking up land prior to these arrangements being completed has a wide field for selection almost immediately available.
