A HORSE "WRINKLE." [Newspaper Article] — Ballan Times — 24 September 1914

A HORSE "WRINKLE.' A correspondent has forwarded to an exchange l!or the benefit of brother far users a method for teaching a young horse to brick into a loaded dray, which he has never known to fail. In backing a horse into the shafts of a loaded vehicle, it constantly happens that the horse strikes the points of one of the shafts, and, becoming nervous, refuses to go into his place. .Some horses: in swinging from side to side, knock down the shafts or tip up the cart, with the result of breakages. A simple remedy is to make fast n rope or rein to the shaft on the near side by two half hit ches. run forward the rope on the in side of the shaft past the horse, and. holding it taut, back the animal along the rope. If he starts away from the rope at first, he is clear of all obstruc tions. When he finds that it is to a certain extent yielding, and does not hurt him, he gains confidence, and. guided bv the pressure of the rope, passes the point of the shal* without any encounter, then ...

QUICK RESULTS FROM NITRATE. HILLSIDE STRAWBERRY A writer in the "National Stockman" says:— [Newspaper Article] — Ballan Times — 24 September 1914

QUICK RESULTS FROM NITRATE. HILLSIDE STRAWBERRY I A writer in the "National Stock l man" savs:— "I am luoro than over impressed with tho merits of the hill system of producing strawberries. It is the means of growing berries of extra size and making a small plot of ground pay handsome returns. If any ol our readers have plants started in hills, it is important to bear in mind that not a runner should bo permitted to gr.iw. Thev should be removed be fore the now plants have struck root. It is al-o important to apply fertilis ers as a top-dressing during the sea son, provided the plants are not mak ing as rapid growth as they should. The sc 'ict of a large yield is in pro ducing very strong, vigorous plants, ami this cannot bo accomplished with out an abundant supply of plant food." GROWING. [Newspaper Article] — Ballan Times — 24 September 1914

GROWING The "Ohio Experiment Station News'' records the following:— F. II. Ballon inys thnt, on tho much starved Jienedict orchard, at Vincent, nitrate ol' soda applied just as the pink of tile blossoms was beginning to show, lias resulted in a, much better harvest of fruit than on the rows of tiers alongside, which were not treat eil w:th tho nitrato of soda. This is a surprise and a wonderful result of nnly about three weeks' time. A care ful checking up of the results in this orchard indicates that 55 per cent, ot i!n> nitrated trees bore good crops, while only 3 per cent, of tho unfer tilised trees showed a good crop of fnrt. This experiment is well worth further trial aud demonstration, and ma.v pt'ovo the solution to some fail ures.

Tiara Boom To-Day. [Newspaper Article] — Ballan Times — 24 September 1914

Tiara Boom To-Day. This was the popular version of the morry song and dance that tickled playgoers twenty yearR or ao ago. At least it was a popular version in tho family of Mr YVilliam Johnston, of Raglan, Victoria, when news cume to him that he had won tho iirst prize in the Eight Hour Art Union. "How did you manage it ?" his friends asked him. "Easy as winking," re plied the jubilant Johnstou. "I just put a shilling's worth of paper into an envelope, which I directed to the secretary, Eight Hour Art Union, Sydney. Then I lay back and1 wait ed, and luck did tho rest for me. A diamond tiara worth £850 isn't to be had for a shilling every day of the year. No, I don't wear tiaras myself but I've a lot of use for it's worth. No wonder I sing Tiara-Boom-to-day. Put in your bob, and you may be as lucky as I."
