"Dead in the Shell." SOME COMMON CAUSES IN POULTRY. [Newspaper Article] — Liverpool News — 2 September 1937

"Deadjn the Shell." w - SOME COMMON CAUSES IN POULTRY. It is often, difficult to be certain of the tauseof cases of "dead in the shell," but when the percentage is unduly high the reason should b? looked for. Assuming the incubator has been run properly and .no experimentation has been indulged in, one of the first matters to consider is the condition of the breeding stock, whether they are physically sound and in good condition or whether the male bird is getting light, qr is infested with vermin. It frequently happens that the male bird allows the hen to get most of the food, and of course he becomes poor. For this reason it is a good plan to give him a feed by himself, preferably cf whole maize, in the middle of the day. The feeding of the bird is also often responsible or the trouble, in so far as they might be over stimulated by get ting too much protein or condiments. Again, they might be surfeited with food, or the reverse might be the case. Care ful feeding is essential to s...

Sewerage Scheme. LIVERPOOL PROPOSAL. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — Liverpool News — 2 September 1937

Sewerage Scheme, LIVERPOOL PROPOSAL, i To the Editor.) Sir,-Beading in your last issue the I present council has unanimously recoin - I mended this scheme, I would just like a little say. Naturally, I am a linn ad vocate tor sewerage, but am definitely opposed to the scheme accepted by this I dying council. To my mind, the present . time is not opportune; the cost is too heavy. I well remember a referendum being taken on the question, not very lung ago, and the scheme was very flatly turned down. Why flout the opinion of the ratepayers concerned, and why this indecent haste ? An alderman confided that we should have the sewerage. There are many things I should have, and many more tilings I would like to have, tout the cost of same will not permit; so it is with this prqposed scheme. I am also amused when I note the fact that nine of the twelve aldermen cunsti I tuting the present council are not vitally interested, living, as they do. outside the sewer area. Tuen why foist their ide...
