THE BRANCHES. NEWCASTLE. Acting-Secretary's Visit. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 30 June 1900

THE BRANCHES. j NEWCASTLE. (flcting-Secretary's Visit. JThr occasional visits paid us by our Sydney comrades have always had the j effect of stimulating the members in the work of the movement, and the hope that springs etertnal in the hu-. man breast burns all the . brighter from the 'spirit of encouragement r which characterises their efforts when in our midst. To-day the branch can not boast a 'heavy'' roll, but the spirit of earnestness with which com rades are entering upon the very stupendous task of otganisatinnhns its inspiring influence, 'lht- effect is so marked that the hitherto magnified mountain becomes to us a mole-hill. That 'Socialism is coming' is ad mitted by rich and poor, capitalist and proletaire ; it is to the interest of the former to retard its progress, the in terest, of the latter to hasteu its'com ing. Society 1ms reached that stage wherein- two classes — and ,two classes only — can be recugnised. The line of demarcation must now be drawn, and sides taken ...

SHREDS AND PATCHES. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 30 June 1900

SHRtDS AND PATCHES. f[BY PAUL JONES.] ' I must have liberty, Withal, as large a charter as tha wind, To blow on whom I please.' As You Likb It. The C.S.R. Co. is already ad vertising for canecutters. The season will commence early in July The rate of pay is to be half-a-crown upon the hills and two shillings and threepence on the flats. This is not sufficient. It does not permit men to earn a fair wage for a fair day's work. A gang of say 10 men will cut on an average about ISO tons of cane in a week. This means £2 5s. for each man. (I am sup posing them to be engaged in the hill country.) But to do this they must work at least 1-1 hours per day. Now £2 5s per week is seven and sixpence a day, and seven and sixpence for a day of 14 h'ours is, roughly speaking, sixpence half-penny per hour. About a half-penny more than the London Dockers. I have seen the members of a cane gang sitting on a tence oerore the stars went out in the morning waiting to commence work the moment sufficient l...

SONS OF THE SEA. THEIR SHARE OF THE GLORY. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 30 June 1900

SONS OF THE SEfl. THEIR SHARE OF THE GLORY. The great war cruiser, ' Europa,' now in Sydney, is a tremendous affair, but the admira tion oi the populace for the ship is not enthusiastically shared by the ' bovs in blue,' who came out in her and those who take her home. Strange, is it not ? Es pecially when ' the Hempire ' has let itself go regardless of cost. 'The bojs of the bull dog breed ' get the' magnificent sum of Is Sd per day, and with the exception of tea and bread, at least, so it is said, have to find themselves. The bulk of their clothes have also to be found bj* the men. On the trip our the stokers, to the number of 40, made a strong pro test against the conditions undrr which they had to work, and, with a considerable number of the crew, struck for hotter treat ment. This is according to rumor — and rumor is not always incorrect. Again, there is talk that the commander of the boat found it a very difficult task — owingto hisunpopularitj with the men — to preserve anyth...

Newcastle Vigilantes. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 30 June 1900

Newcastle Vigilantes. The members of the Newcastle Vigilance Committee against whom serionB char^eH haH been vaguely levelled by executive memberB as reported last wetk were very much aitray when they reckoned tbe charges would be made honestly and openly at the general meeting. \y here they had expected to find their accusers, they bebe'd only empty chains The ' enemy '' had fled. Here was a new development — The people who had glibly charged Dr Doyle and Holland with attempting to burst up the com mittee, had row deliberately ab sented themselves for the express purpose of preventing the meet ing being held. But they reckoned ahead of facts. Ten duly accredited dele gates being present when eight o'clock arrived, Dr. Doylo wae Toted to the chair, and busin ss was proceeded with. The chairman commented severly on the position created t-y the absent members. There were no apologies, no executive report, and no financial statement, although the previous meetinghud instructed the trea...

SHREDS AND PATCHES. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 7 July 1900

SHREDS AND PATCHES, [BY PAUL JONES.] 'I muBt have liberty, Withal, as large a charter as the wind, To blow on whom I please.' As You Like It . SAYS the Delirium Tremens : ' Since Sir John Forrest became Premier the population of West Australia has increased from 50,000 to 180,000.' From which it would be inferred that the Westralian Premiership carries with if the duties of incubator. ? One wet morning, about a fortnight ago, an old man — aged 80 — was found, by a constable, lying on the steps of the Salva tion Army's ' People's ' Palace, in Pitt-street, Sydney. A daily paper reporting the matter says : ' He was in a weak and emaciated condition, and presented a pitiable sight. He was suffering appar ently from starvation, an-? ap peared to have thrown himself down to die. He said he had been lying there all night. The Civil Ambulance Brigade was communicated with, and the old man was conveyed to the Sydney Hospital, where, however, he died shortly afterwards. The world is a great b...

MUNICIPAL REFORM. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 7 July 1900

MUNICIPAL, REFORM. In spite of the fact that the -workers of Sydney and Newcastle have definitely expressed their clear demands for Municipal Re form, that political skate, W. M. Hughes, M.P. — who masquerades as a ' Labor ' member— the other day led a number of his political associates to Premier Lyne's office with a shriek for a special brand of ' Municipal Reform ' specially designed by Mr. Hughes and his bosses, # # * Previously Hughes had given 'vent in the House to a weird Bevies of utterances, in which he related the horrible sufferings the noble martyr Hughes had voluntarily undergone in the slums of Sydney. Not only did Mi', Hughes emit that shriek, but he persuaded the Sydney '-D.T.' to publish it. '# # ? Hughes demanded the 'reform' of the City Council ' on a broad franchise ' that broad franchise to give the worker a vote, not 011 ac ? count of his manhood, but 011 ac count of, his ability to pay rent ; he also made the stipulation that ' property must have a vote.'i ? ?...
