DR MOORHOUSE, BISHOP OF MELBOURNE. [Newspaper Article] — Wallaroo Times — 3 June 1882

DR MOORHOUSE, BISHOP OF MELBOURNE. Few, if any, colonial Bishops have ever succeeded in making such a name for. themselves as Dr Moorhouse, Bishop of Melbourne. He manifests an interest in everything which concerns his people and the colony. We quote the following excellent sketch of this gentleman from the Melbourne " Bulletin*' :—" On his arrival in Victoria he was surprised at the torpor and mouldiness which he found pervaded every branch of the Church. Seeing that horrible old brown-stone chip off a gaol at St. James's, with the spectacled apology for a tower, globed over with battered tin, lead, or whatever it is, he is reported to have said in dismay, " Is that the Cathedral?'' He found a corresponding lethargy among the members. What! Was this the Church Militant in a new land ? He could not imagine a more somnolent condition in Old Bungay or Old Sarum. It must speedily be ameliorated and reformed altogether. So he quickly decided that a new Cathedral was the first thing of w...

DAMS FOR NINNES. (TO THE EDITOR OF THE WALLAROO TIMES.) [Newspaper Article] — Wallaroo Times — 3 June 1882

DAMS FOB NINNES. 1 fTO THE EDITOB OF THE WALLABOO TIMES.) 3ie,—I am very sorry to trouble you atrain, but I cannot allow such a letter as *' Fair Play" has now written to remain uncontradicted. He says I will find the water made a little warm for me. I dare say that gentlemen would like to see it if be could. He remarked that I said to a gentleman that I would have the dam in spite of " Fair Play" or any one. The remark I made use of was that it was useless for any one now to interfere as the dam in question was now settled upon, and wouid be put down now in spite of any j one. And another ungentlemanly remark he made was, that I had mistaken six for sixtj'. I suppose he means by that the stock I haye. But, Sir, I am "only sorry that I have not sirty ; for if I had I would be better off, my number being only twenty-three all told (not counting the chickens; aud that is little enough to work the ground I have. Hut, Sir, I hold two Government leases and you will see by the Act that I ...
