POLITICAL. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 24 November 1877

POLITICAL. Mr. E. A. Baker, Minister for Mines, haa been, transferred to the office of Secretary for Lands. Mr. A. H. Jacob, the member for-the Lower. Hunter, has accepted office as Secretary for. Lands. Mr. Greville is a candidate for tho Chairman ship of Committees. It is rumoured that Mr. T. Garrett has been offered the post of Under Secretary, vice, Mr. Halloran, who retires on full pay. A rumour has been current during the last few days to the effect that Sir Henry Pavkes would not take his seat in the Asaembly. It ap pears to have arisen from his expressed un willingness to enter the House at the present time. It is, however, now undoratood that Sir Henry will take his seat for Canterbury, mainly in appreciation of the generous and spontaneous support accorded him in that constituency, but he will abstain, for the present, from taking an active part in political affairs. This, it is said, will leave the way clear for the formation of a strong opposition. Northumberland Electio...

Now that the burly-burly's done, and the new House is elected, men are beginning to look around them, to consider what will be the next move upoD the political chessboard. . Parliament is to meet for business on Tues day next. This is an event which always interests an English community, who know and feel instinctively how largely their wel fare may be affected by the proceedings of che groat council of the country. On these occasions, people who are generally apathetic about political affairs, show an interest in, and a solicitude about there matters, and rightly so, for every citizen of a free country is in duty bound to watch the actions of the Legislature no less than he does the adminis tration of justice. There is grave work to be done, and the moral character of the country greatly depends upon the way in which Par liament treat the subjects which will be pre senfed to its notice. Although both knights still retain places, the position of Sir Henry Parkes is con siderably wea...

PURCHASE OF LAND ON GOLD-FIELDS. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 24 November 1877

PURCHASE OF LAND ON GOLD-FIELDS. Great complaints exist at the present time amongst tho gold minors on account of the alienation of lands on gold-fields. By tho 8th section of tho Crown Lands Alietition Act of 1861, persons could purchase improved lands on goldfields in quantities up to two acres. This clause was repealed by tlio .Lands Act Amend ment Act, but in substance re-enacted by section 2 of that Act. The intention of the Legis lature was doubtless to give miners and traders on gold-fields the privilege of purchasing, with out competition, the small plots of lands on which they had built their residences or places of business. It has however, become tho cus tom for applications to be made for five, ten or even twenty lots of two acres each. Tho appli cants fence these in, and then apply for more and in thia way the goldfields are being rapidly and largely taken up, not merely for residence, but for grazing and farming. Tho Minister for Mines has caused to be issued, tlie fol...

Correspondence. (To the Editor of the Grenfell Record.) [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 24 November 1877

Correspondence. (To the Editor of the Orenfall Itecord.) Sir, — A letter lately appeared in the metropo litan journals, and has been vory extensively copied into country newspapers, tho subjoct nutter of which ia, I consider, of the very greatest importance to the inhabitants of coun try towns. I refer to the Hon. the Minister fot-Mine8 instiuctiona to tho Gold-Fields War dens, respecting the improvement of two-aoro' allotments upon gold-fielda. Mr. Baker leaves it to be inferred from his letter that it is illegal to improvo moro than one-half an acre upon a. gold-field, and should anyone do so, that he is liable to be removed aB a trespasser. How the Hon. the Minister for Mines could, after his long experience upon the gold-fields, havo come to bucIi a conclusion, I am at a loas to know. By the 8th section of the Crown Lands Aliena tion Act, it was provided that the improver, or his alienee, may purchase improved lands upon gold-fields at a price to be fixed by appraise ment, to th...

GRENFELL CONSOLS MINE: We understand that Mr. P. Davis, late manager pf the Lacmalac G. M. Co., Tumut, haa been appointed manager of the well-known Consols Company in our town. Mr. Daviea took charge of the mine on_ tho 15th instant, and almost no waa in narneas, a numoer or tne men who were employed in the mine, made a direct cnmplaint to him that the ladder-way leading, up and down the mine, waa in a very dangerous condition, owing to the breakage and decay of tinjber in tho old workings, the ground showing decided aigna of being on the move. Thia atato of thingB led the now manager to examine the condition of tho workings, his observation led him to believe that the complaints by the men were fully justified, he therefore posted a notice at the claim last Saturday, to the following effect.
