PAPER IN JAPAN. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 3 February 1875

PAPER IN JAPAN! PROM TIIE PRINTER'S REGISTER. When a people contrive to make saucepans, fine pockethandker chiefs, . and sailors' water-rproof overcoats out of paper, they may be considered as having pretty thoroughly mastered a useful art ; and this is demonstrated by the above articles of Japanese manu facture, with the additional little, circumstance that the saucepans are generally used over charcoal fires. According to their own account, these ancient islanders wrote upon silk faced with linen, and also used very thin wood shavings for the same purpose, until nearly the close of tlie third Christian era. About A.n. 280 paper was first imported from the Corea, and su perseding the liomermade fabrics, monopolised the market until' the 3'ear a.d. 610, when the king of the Corea sent two priests to Japan to establish the manufacture. This paper was easily torn, and liable to be destroyed by worms, and, be sides, did not take the ink well. These manifold disadvantages at tracted the...

THE O'CONNELL CENTENARY. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 3 February 1875

THE O'CONNELL CENTE NARY. . The Times { Nov. 7) asks 'Irish patriots and friends of freedom throughout the world'— at least, such of them as have not yet com mitted themselves to approval of the project. for celebrating the cen tenary of O'Connell's birth — whether it would not be better to lfinvR the memorv of O'Conncll alone. There is no danger that it will soon.be forgotten, and it is not easy to allege, any adequate gain to be realised by bringing it prominently before, the world, while the ill results to be appre hended are many and obvious. One may be indicated — perhaps the most serious and important of all. The unqualified glorification of the Liberator's character, and a profession of faith on the part of a large mass of the Irish people in the wisdom and excellency of his policy from the beginning to the end of his career, must increase the difficulties which already im pede the mutual sympathies of Englishmen and Irishmen. His energy compelled the English Go vernment to e...
