ELECTRIC WIRES AND DANGER To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 9 April 1914

ELECTRIC WIRES AND DANGER To llie Editor. Sir,—In your issue of April 2nd I notice amoug the ''News and Notes" a warning given to house hollers against touching tlic electric wires at Coleraino. Whilst for a moment I do not advocate electric wires, not even telephone wires, being- handled by the unskilled, there is not the same danger with your system of supply as there is with that- at Malvern where a poor child aged 4J- years was recently killed. At Malvern, the supply is an al ternating current one of 400 vol is. At Coleraino, the supply is direct current, 230 volts. Furthermore ' lie Melbourne suburban systems are " earthed"; the Coleraino is n;>t. As a result of this, it' standing on the ground or on an iron roof ('.;on nected to the ground by down ] -pes or other means) one, iu the former can get a shock by touching any of the active wires, whilst in the lat ter tio shock would be given. I would further point out thai the current that killed the little child would not bo ne...

MAKING FARMING PAY. [Newspaper Article] — Coleraine Albion and Western Advertiser — 9 April 1914

MAKING FARMING PAY. We are aii trying to make thing3 pay, but we refuse to invest enough brains in the study of things so that we can make them pay. Farming everywhere, and in everything, is a deep question, one o fthe profound est. It. requires a lot of thought, study and good judgment to make it pay. Some must have an Immediate profit, and so they skin the land. Oth ers try to save expense in labor, and harvest no crop; others try to save ex pense in labor, and harvest no crop; others try to save expense in secur ing good breeding stock, and so pro duc cows theat do not giv the most profitable result. Others refuse to feed a good cow sufficiently to enable her to produce to her fullest capacity. All about us is this ever-present ques tion of making things pay, and saving useless, not useful, expense. Surely there is neded a lot of wit and wisdom on the farm. A young gill was going to make her first visit to a cousin in the country. At the station she was met by the cousin, and aft...
