Benefit Concert [Newspaper Article] — The Cumberland Free Press — 7 September 1895

Sunday School room was crowded on the nignt of Friday last on the occasion of the en tertainment arranged for by the local lodge I.O.O.F. for the benefit of the widow of Mr. G. Stout (whose decease we notified some weeks back). Tbe building was packed before the commen cement of the concert, and late coiners had to be content with standing room in a crowd aud an occasional glimpse, from the doorway, of stage and perform ers. The executive committee (Messrs. E. Williams, W. Thompson, and J. Gibbs) and other prominent workers had erected a natty stage with all appur tenances (side-rooms etc.) aud had other wise done their utmost to give the building an attractive, social-like ap pearance. ROOKWOOD. The Municipal Imbroglio at Rookwood. THE LEADER OF THE. MAJORITY. AL11ERMAN GROVES* VIEWS. A Fhke Pkehs representative en countering (tho other day) Alderman droves, of Rookwood — the recognised leader of the majority party in the Council of that inuah-troubled muni cipality — asked him what further light recent events had thrown,', on past irregularities and present differences. . ' Everything,' said the leader ofthe Opposition, ' is coming ont'as we said last January it would. The proofs are with us. As treasurer, I have been able to find that the books have been altered, and documents (apparently) removed altogether. What is worse, it is clearer than ever that matters have been suppressed and smoothed over. To cap all, the plain directions ofthe Council are ignored.' ' Is this affecting tbe finances ?'
