SEPARATION IN QUEENSLAND. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 25 May 1914

SEPARATION IN QUEENSLAND. What is singularly suggestive of a futile move ment has been proceeding in Queensland for many years with alternate quiescent lapses and active revivals. Its objective is the separation of the northern portion of the State from the southern, and it is, of course, chiefly justified and advocated by the provincial argument that Brisbane, under present conditions, is (Jueensland. If the agitators, or advocates, were in X.S.W. there would be some justification of their plea. But Queensland's numerous (iovernments, with all their faults — and they have been many and, in some in stances, shocking — have, generally speaking, not made decentralisation the side issue as has been the case in other States. Northern Queensland, in fact, has been fortunate by comparison. — Philp, .for many years Premier, Avas the representative of Townsville, and there have been other northern representatives, more or less strong men, in the various Ministries. : Of course, thousands ha...

"IN TH' VERNACULAR." [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 25 May 1914

'IN TH' VERNACULAR.' The last issue of the 'Salon' says that architects have long demanded the repeal of the present Build ing Act 'under which they are at present bound by.' Which suggests a strangle hold, a half-nelson, or some other term of ju-jitsu. No wonder the archi tects are protesting. Mr. lu-nest Wunderlich ( Wunderlich, Ltd.) has been appointed a trustee of the Sydney Museum in place of the late Colonel Vernon.

BRISBANE'S FERRY SERVICE. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 25 May 1914

BRISBANE'S FERRY SERVICE. From Brisbane: — Whoever wrote recently in your journal regard ing Brisbane's progressi\-eness evidently never ex perienced the ferry service. It is about the, most out-of-date thing of its kind this side of the line. Anybody experiencing it after the speed and regu larity of the Sydney service is calculated to die of shock. For a long time they hadn't a decent boat: When that arrived there Avas always something' 'wrong, or alleged to be wrong with it. Noav that the defect appears to have been fixed up the difficulty is that both approaches are too 'narrow, and the stream of people- going off at the busy periods gets mixed up with the stream going on. In fact everything con nected Avith the service is mixed. The 'Courier,' however, sees in the appointment of an officer to check passengers' tickets, something indicative of an era of reform. ? ? — -_?*

TRUISMS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 1 June 1914

TRUISMS. Mr. Win, Stuart: What is the use of our education system when so many laborers are being turned out? . . . The laws passed are only chairmen's awards after all, and I am sorry to say that the chair men know very little. . . The result is, some times nonsense, and at other times a real evil. . . In the anxiety to improve conditions for 'the work ers' regulations have been made in regard to appren ticeship that are confusing and idiotic. . . There has been nothing devised to take the place of the training of the boys by the masters. Mr. Foster: The laborers are becoming the aris tocracy of labor.

FROM BOMBSHELL TO EARTHQUAKE. The Evolution of the Builders Laborers' Award. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 1 June 1914

FROM' BOMBSHELL TO EARTHQUAKE. The Evolution of the Builders Laborers' Award. When Judge Higgins gave his decision in the builders laborers' case, it was described by master builders generally as a 'bombshell.' But it was questionable if it would explode. Master builders appealed confidently to the High Court questioning the jurisdiction of the Federal Arbitration Court. Since, however, the appeal has been rejected by a majority decision, tne term foombsneir nas Decome too small. It is an 'earthquake' now. That, at least, is how it is defined by one prominent master builder; and his opinion is shared by others of the profession. N.S.W. master builders have been discussing the matter in conclave, and while they may have the satisfaction, or consolation, that the intelligence of the High Court — intelligence being a matter of opinion — on their side, it is sufficient to see what they can do more than bow to the inevitable. They can do that so far as accepting the decision goes, but th...
