A meeting of the committee of the Wan. garatta Turf Club was hold at Powell's Royal Victoria Hotel on Friday evening, for the pur. pose of receiving the acceptances for the two principal handicaps. There were present Messrs. A.. Tone, in the chair, J. Norton, Kett, Rundle, Powell, Wilson, Grant; Evans, Crone, Johnstone, . Heathcote, Wilson, and the secretary. OUR SHIRE COUNCILLORS.   To the Editor of the North Eastern Ensign. Sir,-The social delinquencies of our Presi dent and his coadjutors in the Shire Council are culminating to a point. Whether their re trograde course will cause them to pause before they cross the rubicon that leads to public execration seems doubtful. Yet, whilst on its brink they may look around and examine their position and take a survey of some of their shortcomings, to which end I will try to assist them. Some time ago   while yet this cloud of abuses did not obtrude prominently by their gauocheries, on the public gaze, there was a glow in the embers of local estimation that might have been fanned into enthusiasm, had they been capable of appre ciating a generous public desirous of think ing well of them; but no, their selfishness, their self opinionativeness, their stubborn ness, and their arrogance and ignorance have drowned all the latent warmth that existed in the public mind.
