The German Alliance. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 10 April 1903

. The, Ucraiau Alliaucc. The irritation which prevails in this country (writes an English correspon dent) over the Government's cooper ation with Germany in the Venezuelan business ha-t promoted a distinct ten dency towards a better feeling with Russia. The methods of that' power in China and in Central Asia. are not, forgotten, and hundreds of people are not- disposed to accept any. of lier pledges, however solejnu they may be. Nevertheless, several of our more powerful newspapers are urging that in the middle East we should work , with her rather than with- -Germany. There is a fear that England ' inay have already committed herself ?. to- wards Germany over the ySnph rates railway scheme. ' But if tliat be liot the case it is urged that, the time is at hand when the' British and ! Russian Governments should comei tio an uhder . standi tig.-- respecting their-j'spheres of influence and commercial activity in Persia. €0 KKESPOK BfcEN €12. (To the lCditor of the Jtiehnumd Mvcr Kxprctw.) Slit,— On the occasion of the public farewell social to ex-Alderman Carmont, last week, some exception to my remarks was taken by Mr. Tandy, to tho effect that they were all loyal subjects there, uiu not wanii anyone eise, auu wouiun i- have them. I would liko to remind Mr. Tandy that' in a country where liborty of the Press and free speech were so treasured, I for one absolutely refuse to be dictated to by any individual as to what I shall say at a public meeting. I ask Mr. Tandy to contrast my few words with the last woi-k of-j Marie Corelli, which has circulated throughout tho British Empire, and from an author who has gained fame among the British people, and whom Mr. Gladstone told to be courageous and go on with her good work. We have been told often enough that the King or Queen is only a figure-head ; but later events have proved their influence for good or ovil cannot be over-estimated, even though we hav...

"Why Meat is Dear." [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 10 April 1903

' Why Meat is I»eai\' We all hear a lot about dear meat, and nearly all the consumers are paying en hanced prices. Why ? Becauso the de maud'of the Unions for shorter hours and more pay have made the cost of distribu tion much heavier than it was a short time a'o. There can be no other reason, as it is a plain fact mutton is not making more at Homehush nou than it has done for several years past, with the exception of the short period of dear meat six months ago — 2d to 2id, according to quality, is the average cost uow 'at the sale yards. Beef is still rather dearer than normal values, say about id per lb., but that is all. The moral of the above is that, while men in trades are raising the cost of dis tribution on employers, the niau who suffers most is the man whose labour can not bo protected, viz, the general la bourer, who has less work and an en hanced cost of living to face. If 7s pel day for all unskilled labour were possible, the unskilled labourer might survive the presen...
