SHARE MARKET AND MINING. Business generally was quiet on 'change on. Saturday, and business closed with low er prices than on Friday. In the morning prices were farlv firm, and a cood manv ^Northern Associateds were taken, uut just l-eforc the closing of the market sellers pre dominated, and a weaker tone prevailed. London advised a fall of some 13s. in Lake View Consols, but no business . resulted locally. Northern .Associated -, had most business, arid fell about 1/. Main Reefs and Preseverance with some turnover dropped 1/6 and 3/ respectively. Nothing else in gold stock to call for comment. Sil ver stocks were quiet at Friday's rates. Copper hail very few exchanges without al teration iii prices, and North Queensland tin rose £2. Owing to the illness of the manager of Paull's Consolidated the directors have ar ranged Avith Captain Joel Phillips to leave for the property to-day and take over the management.

The total fall at Govder's La goon was live - .inches, at Andrawilla three inches, at Birdsville three inches. The' Diamentina River is ' running a banker from the local rains.' The V'arcory and Glengyle Stations recor ded seven inches, and Cluny and Be dowie 'two 'inches. The drought in those districts may be considered to have broken up.. The mail driver reports that the coun try between Clayton and Birdsville is look iiijj; splendid. The mail contractor, Mr. Helling, is now putting horses on the stages, which. he. lias been obliged, owing to the drought, to ran with camels for months past.

Tire MAYORAL ELECTION An extraordinary election was held on Saturday to fill the vacancy in the mayor alty of the City of Adelaide caused by the unseating of Mr. A. W. Ware in conse quence of a tschrfcical defect in his nomina tion paper. At the ordinary election, which was held on December 1, 1899, Mr. Ware obtained 3,517 votes, while 3u's opponent, Mr. W. Jonc?, polled only 073. A few weeks later Mr. Jones appealed to the court to have the election unset on .the ground that Mr. Ware had been described as a 'gentle- man' on his nomination paper, whereas lie should have been designated a 'licensed victualler.' The case was argued before Mr. .1. Gorilon, S.M., who found that the description was likely to mislead the rate payers, and that the nomination paper was informal. Tlie court declined to recognise Mr. Jones's claim to t'he position, and de clared the mayoral office vacant. THE HOSPITAL TROUBLE. We understand that every point m dis pute in connection with the Adelaide Hos-v prtal has 'been finally and satisfactorily settled. The whole of the members of the honorary medical and surgical staffs have returned to the institution, and the stu dents attending the medical school will take up their studies next week. Dr. Leith Napier's leave of absence has expir-.: ed, but- instead of resuming his duties 'at' the hospital he has taken Dr. Roseby's place at the lunatic asylums as Dr. Cle land's assistant. At present Dr. Roseby is attending to the plague patient at the quar antine station, and when he is releived he will probably 'join the Adelaide Hospital staff.

Of -tins 'sum about £50,000 is re presented by increased expenditure on am munition in consequence of the rifle clubs having within the last 12 months increased their membership from a, few hundred to 20,000 men. Ammunition is being sold to the members 'of the rifle clubs at 2s. 6d. per 100 rounds.

Crews 'renresentinc the Mercantile and Albert Park clubs competed, and a splendid contest ended in victory for Mer cantile, .in 14 min. 2-5th sac. The crews rowed neck and neck 'for two miles, and tha Mercantile boat then gradually went ahead, and had the race won. The win ning crew was stroked by A. B. Sloan and the Albert Park crew by J. Donald.
