Safety of Flat-bottomed Boats. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 24 February 1905

Safety of Flat-bottomed Boats. In the Court of Marine Inquiry on Friday (says the ' S. M. Herald ''), Judge Backhouse made some strong remarks on the danger of allowing flat-bottomed boats to go to, sea. Every time they went out, he said, the lives of those on board were in -jeopardy. The Conrt was cnirajrod iiuiui rinir into the circumstances of the foundering of the Violet Doepel near the Bellinger Heads on 24th January last. It. ap peared that the vessel was passed last October by the navigation authorises as seaworthy. She was a llatbotloni ed boat, and the evidence was that in. adverse weather vessels of this- con- struction laboured considi rably. The vessel took twenty- three diiys to go from Port Stephens to Bellinger Headsj a comparatively short distance, as she encountered uorlh-ensterly winds throughout the voyage. Several ex perts who were examined gave it as their opinion that the limbers of the vessel became strained through the way she '' worked ' in the waves-, and s...
