Duke vs. UConn: One for the ages [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 1 April 1999

Duke vs. UConn: One for the ages Out of Bounds JASON SNYDER The annual activities following the NCAA Tournament are in full swing now, as fans complete filling out their official NCAA brackets, prizes get handed to the fans with the most accurate bracket predictions and the winners and losers of the tournament head home to their fans with differing attitudes. There is even talk of who will be cutting down the nets next year. But above all these March Madness rituals, there stands one; reminiscing of a tournament of surprises, upsets, big-time players. and collegiate athletes that leave their hearts and souls on the basketball court for one thing, the glory of a national championship. Because of all this, March Madness continues to be one of the greatest spectacles in all of sports. 1999, for sure, couldn't have fallen short of anyone's expectations for the drama and excitement that the tournament provides. The NCAA Championship game between Duke and Connecticut proved to b...

f > UConn Defeats Duke To Win National Title [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 1 April 1999

f > UConn Defeats Duke To Win National Title [Down to the Wire... By John Akers Knight-Ridder Newspapers ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - As a nation might have noticed Monday, Connecticut had quite a game plan for top-ranked and seemingly invincible Duke. It should have. The plan that led to UConn's 77-74 victory and a national title that "shocked the world," as CBS announcers put it, was five months in the making. The effective double-teams on national player of the year Elton Brand, the pressure on Trajan Langdon and the continuous drives by the Huskies' Richard Hamilton and others were all notes scribbled on small blue cards by Coach Jim Calhoun. "Starting in November, I started watching games and taking notes," Calhoun said. "I < took notes on Cincinnati when I thought they were the best team, and then on Duke." Calhoun gave his Huskies - ranked No. 1 for more weeks than the Blue Devils - more of a chance than most of the country had given them. A blowout seemed m...

MMMbop, oh yes [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 1 April 1999

MMMbop, oh yes Agent Katherine Spice staff writer I recently purchased what just may be the best CD in the world. I am talking about Middle Of Nowhere, by the brothers Hansen. The three brothers that make up this super group are all wonderfully talented and they are all so cute!!! Ranging in age from 12-18 these three boys simply pour their hearts and souls into every single one of their songs. Their first hit single, MMMbop, struck such a deep chord in this listener's soul, so much so that I just HAD to buy the CD. The littlest Hansen, Zac, is so wellbehaved and has never made a fool out of himself on TV by being jerky or obnoxious. His drum playing ability by far outweighs any other 12 year old drummer. The middle brother, Taylor, just turned 15 and is every lady's favorite Hansen. His voice is so pure and angelic that when he sings "Where's the Love?" It makes your heart simply ache!! David Cassidy has nothing on this kid! Ike, the oldest Hansen at the ripe old age of 18 ...

Dobbins is scrumptiliicious [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 1 April 1999

Dobbins is scrumptiliicious By Eric Cartman food critic The vast potpourri of gourmet cuisine at the Gazebo at Dobbins offers students a miraculous contingency to experience a hearty existence at Behrend. The Mongolian beef and broccoli offers a unique blend of flavors that reminds the ingester of the yurts and yaks. Next, there is the specialite du maison which consists of the Italian fettucini alfredo-sans warmth. Mange mange!!! The savory steak fajitas a la salmonella were a mouth-watering feast that reminded me of a night after a long day riding a burro on a trail south of die border. The day old doughnut delight added a unique twist to the endless assortment of nourishment found in Dobbins. Another capricious dish to add to the long list are the make your own waffles. Although the waffle makers are willfully temperamental, they offer another astonishing spread to the banquet. One of my personally preferred choices is die colossal cereal dispensers which offer gourmet trea...

Blue Devils continue their reign as number one [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 1 April 1999

Blue Devils continue their reign as number one by Jason Fiorello staff writer Prior to the NCAA men's national championship basketball game Monday night, UConn guard Kalid El-Amin put it simply. "We plan to shock the world tonight." He wasn't kidding. What were suppose to be two free throws to secure the game for UConn turned out to be the winning free throws for Duke. With UConn up by one point with 5.2 seconds left, UConn guard Kalid El-Amin hit two free throws at the wrong basket giving Duke a one-point lead and a national tide. Following a lime out, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski instructed his players to foul immediately to put UConn on the line. El-Amin took the in bounds pass and was fouled rather violendy by Duke guard Trajan Langdon, giving El-Amin two free throws and a chance to put UConn up by three. However, apparently the foul had ruffled him so much that he sluggishly walked up and shot the free throws at the wrong basket. His free throws gave Duke a one-point lead...

Irwin addresses Kosovo crisis [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 April 1999

Irwin addresses Kosovo crisis by Mike Coursey staff writer Dr. Zachary Irwin, professor of Political Science, gave a talk on the crisis in Kosovo on Tuesday, April 6th in the Reed Commons. Dr. Irwin's presentation had been originally designated for Reed room number three; but a overflow crowd of approximately 75 people necessitated moving it to the Commons. Dr. Irwin's talk consisted of a brief historical overview of the Balkan area and the implications of the tensions in the area. Dr. Irwin stated that, "Two weeks into the conflict misperceptions have emerged on both sides. NATO overestimated the effect of the bombing and Serbia underestimated the coherence of NATO." Irwin used a map to show that Kosovo is between the size of Rhode Island and Connecticut; and has a population of 1.2 million. Dr. Irwin said that the West feared that the Kosovars would form a "greater Albania with Macedonian Albanians and other Albanians. Such a stale could lead to indefinite conflict in Serb...

Mice in dorms cause problems for students [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 April 1999

Mice in dorms cause problems for students hy Katie Galley wire service editor Monday morning, March 1, 5:45 am: the students in Almy Hall room 403 were rudely awaken to a mysterious scratching and tapping noise. Upon switching on the light the students were astonished to see a brown mouse scurry across their floor and disappear under the door into the central study area. Both students screamed and ran down to the ground floor in Almy to their supervisor's apartment. Dan Schiesser, Almy Hall Supervisor, accompanied the students back to their room to help them look for the mouse. After an extensive search throughout the room the trio came up empty-handed. Schiesser advised the girls to contact Housing and Food Services to come up and investigate the situation. Both of the students called the Housing and Food Services office and left messages because it was still only 6:30 am. Thinking that Housing may not take them seriously, both girls called their parents and had them call H...
