Complimentary Benefits . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 3 December 1853

Complimentary Benefits . A proposition has been made , and a Committee appointed [• get up a Complimentary Benefit in aid-of Mr . Palmo , atone time connected with an Italian Opera Company in this city . Like others who have followed him , Mr . Palmo got up the Opera to make money—the American people cared not a straw whether he succeeded or not—the Italian Opera never was and never will be a popular institution in this city . Mr . Palmo failed , as many better men have done ; and as he has managed to live for a number of years , notwithstanding his failure , we see no good reason for a Complimentary Benefit being given him . Mr . Brougham , a gentleman in every sense of the word , and whose managerial career at the Lyceum proved disastrous to him , had a Complimentary Benefit tendered him shortly after the close of that establishment , but the compliment intended was so opposed by a portion of the Press , and other gentle men on the if free list , that , at the earnest request of M...

A Hot Cross Bunn . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 3 December 1853

A Hot Cross Bunn . This is the title we have concluded to bestow on Alfred Bunn , a theatrical gentleman , who came to this country from England about a year ago , and not succeeding in carrying the town by storm , bethought him of traveling through the States , taking notes of this thing and that thing , and pencilling them on the way . At the time Mr . Bunn reached New York from England , the press , as usual , endeavored to puff him into notoriety , he being a foreigner , and entitled to all those little attentions and civilities usually bestowed on foreign artists . This Bunn , during his residence among us , was guilty of many little peccadilloes , the moBt prominent of which was his sharing the bed and board , for one night only , of a colored prostitute . The lady , during the slumbers of the Bunn . searched the breeches of her sleeping partner , and paid herself the salary due her for services rendered . Although this affair created considerable talk at the time , the press ...

A GREAT BATTLE . Randall ¦ nd Turner . - [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 3 December 1853

A GREAT BATTLE . Randall ¦ nd Turner . - TWO H 0 DR 8 AUD 19 MIITDTCS . In the next number . of the Clipper , will be published the full report of the battles between Jack Randall and Ned Tu rner , one of the most exciting and terrific fights of the English Ring . The battle lasted two hours and nineteen minutes , during which time but thirty-four rounds wero fought , several of the rou nds occupying fifteen minutes each . So cautious were the men on setting to , and so anxious was each to obtain the first advantage , that full five minutes elapsed before a blow had been struck , each man man being anxious to discover the weak points of his opponent . Tom Cribb , tbe renowned Champion of England , was the adviser of Randall , while Owen did the genteel for Turner . We believe the report of this great fight was never published in this country before , and we hope our friends will secure a copy early , as it will be impossible to print a second edition . Look out for next week s Clipp...

I nrTELLIGEJCE SHOPS . Commercial College . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 3 December 1853

I nrTELLIGEJCE SHOPS . Commercial College . Readers of the daily papers have doubtless noticed advertisements in those papers , in which young men in want of situations were informed that they could be accommodated at the shortest notice . To make the bait more tempting , salaries of S 800 , 81000 , & c . were promised . Applicants were directed to proceed to a place called a Commercial College , of which a man calling himself Goward , was the so-called President . Two young men were taken into College and done for last week , but not liking the style of instructions , they made a complft int against the so-called President , and bad a warrant issued for his arrest . Now is there any difference between a mock-auction shop and Commercial Colleges and Intelligence Offices • Decidedly there is , but the more honest of the two is the auction shop , for if a man is defrauded there , he is defrauded with his eyes open , and in the attempt , mind you , to obtain a bargain at th...
