BIG FORTUNES . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 10 June 1880

BIG FORTUNES . Speaking on the subject of colossal fortunes in these modern times , the San Francisco Chronicle says : Half a century ago , the reputed wealthiest man in America was old Stephen Girard , ot Philadelphia ; his estate was appraised below $ 15 , 000 , 000 . There are probably now 100 private fortunes in the United States , each greater than Girard s , and half a dozen more than twice as great . There seems to be little doubt but that the next fifty years will see a still greater stride in the direction of these enormous fortunes , and still less so that this growth will be particularly noticeable in the mat ter of land property . The enormous land grants made to the railroads , must increase in value to an extent almost beyond the reach of imagina tion during the remainder of this century . What with the rapid growth of the country and the increasing tendency among emigrants from all countries to seek the virgin lands of the West , we have little doubt that men now livi...

THE PROPOSED NEW PATENT LAW [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 10 June 1880

THE PROPOSED NEW PATENT LAW The press of the country is generally commenting unfavorably upon the bill lately introduced into the House of Representatives by Mr . Young , which provides : That any person or persons who introduce from a foreign country any secret art , invention , or process useful and important to the public , and not patented there , and at the time of application not understood in this country , may , upon payment of the fees required by law , and other due proceedings bad as in the case of new inventions , obtain a patent therefor . And it is hereby declared that any secret art , invention , or process which has been used or practiced , unpatented , for the period of fifty years last past exclusively in the country where obtained , shall be deemed a secret in the meaning of this act . The practice in all the past has been to limit patents , so far as possible , to what is new or useful . This new bill overturns the whole principle of our patent laws . The Scienti...

INSURANCE . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 10 June 1880

INSURANCE . MUTUAL INSURANCE CONSIDERED . A gentleman writing to the crop editor of the FABMEBS REVIEW , inquires why this paper opposes the mutual fire aud life insurance system . It is a question which we cheerfully answer . The FABMEBS REVIEW speaks to so large a constituency that it would be very derelict to its duty were it not to speak on a subject of such interest to farmers as the question of their carrying their own insurance . Tlie question of insurance is not one that can be disposed of in a hurry . It has taken the experience of many generations to reduce insurance to tlie science which it is to-day . The mutual system is the primitive system of Insurance , and was practiced two thousand years ago and bears about the same relation to properly conducted stock insurance as the old fashioned wooden plow does to a modern sulky plow , or as a sickle does to a reaper . Its inherent defects have caused numberless mutual companies to sicken nnd die , and we doubt if there is a s...

RAILROAD ITEMS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 10 June 1880

RAILROAD ITEMS . A bill in chancery was filed in this court on last Saturday by George M . Pullman and the Pullman Palace-car Company against the New York Central Sleeping-car Company and Webster Wagner , charging the latter with an infringement upon the Pullman sleeping-car patents . It is shown that in 1859 George M . Pullman and Ben Field invented certain improvements in sleeping-cars , which were afterward patented . Since the improvements mentioned were made a corporation has been organized for the purpose of building improved coaches , and nearly $ 10 , 000 , 000 has been invested in the business . The company has at present about eight hundred cars in operation . In 186 !) Pullman made a contract with Wagner and his associates , who then had the exclusive right to run sleeping-cars on the New York Central railroad , by which they were allowed to use his cars and patents on certain terms upon that road , and afterward upon the Boston and Albany and Shore Line railroads . Contr...

LITERARY . ADVICE . Take the open air , The more you take the better ; Follow nature s laws To the very letter . Eat the simplest food . Drink t e pure , cold water , Then you will be well , Or at least yon ought to . FRIGHTED WITH FALSE FIRE . D . CHRISTIE MURRAY IN BELGRAVIA . The surging tide of horror took to itself a hundred whispering voices . Pallid , awful faces flashed from it , and disappeared in it ; and from dreadful lips that came and vanished rose floating murmurs like noises of the sea , all urging him to do the deed , and free himself , and be happy . He knew that they were the voices of perdition , and that their promises of happiness was a lie as deep as hell . He answered so in his own heart ; but they all whispered , Get the deed done ! He could not withstand their awful bidding . ...

MISCELLANEOUS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 10 June 1880

MISCELLANEOUS . • THE RAVEN IN COURT . When McPelter and Howler , battery case , was called in the police court the other day , and the prosecutor limped into court , a universal shudder of sympathy went through the entire room . The party battered was probably the most broken up specimen of humanity ever seen in that vicinity , and even the impassable lineaments of Judge Bix relaxed with compassion as the much beplastered and pasted-up victim of man s inhumanity to man hobbled into the witness-stand and glanced indignantly from under the green patches over his eyes at the defendant . State your case , my poor man , said the judge . If you please , your honor , mumbled the wreck , some of whose front teeth were loose , I am a professor of elocution , and live on Howard street , in the same house with , and in the next room to , the defendant , who I may say is an entire stranger to me . Night before last , as I was engaged in giving a lesson to one of my pupils , this fiend broke vi...

CHAFF . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 10 June 1880

CHAFF . PAT S CRITICISM . There s a story that s old , Butrgood if twice told , Of a doctor of limited skill , Who cured beast and man On the cold water plan , Without the small help of a pill . On his portal of pine Hung an elegant sign Depicting a beautiful rill ; And a lake , where a sprite , In apparent delight , Was sporting in sweet dishabille . Pat McOarty , one day , As he sauntered that way , Stood and gazed at ihat portal of pine ; When the doctor , with pride , Stepped up to Pat s side , Saying : Pat , how is that for a sign ? There s wan thing , says Pat , Ye ve left out othat , Which , be jabers , is quite a mistake ; It s trim and it s nate , But to make it complate Ye shud have a foine burd on the lake . Ah ! indeed ! pray then tell , To make it look well , What bird da you think it may lack ? Says Pat , Of the same I ve forgotten the mme , But the song that it sings is quack ! quack !
