The Value of Pedigrees [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 November 1910

The Value of Pedigrees The hog that is entitled to a pedigree has a value aside from the animal itself ; in other words it is an added worth to the hog . Even the farmer who is not in the breeding business attaches an extra value to his boar or sow for which he has a recorded pedigree . If an animal is eligible to record and entitled to be recorded , but through neglect or refusal of some former owner to have the pedigree recorded to give the animal s line of title perfect , it depreciates the value of the animal just the same as if not entitled to record , at least while this condition exists , for , if through neglect or refusal it is impossible to record the animals , it is no better than one that is not entitled to record . With careful breeders there should he no trouble over the pedigree matter , as every animal in the herd used as a breeder should be recorded , then it is a simple thing to write the pedigree of the progeny of the animals or the recorded animals themselves . New Breeder Will Move From Illinois to Colorado . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 November 1910

New Breeder Will Move From Illinois to Colorado . Mr . John H . Lettow , who recently purchased a herd of Berkshires from A . J . Lovejoy & Son , is going to move to the San Luis Valley , Colorado , this coming winter or spring , and judging from the need of Berkshires in the far west , we feel that this gentleman will certainly do well in his new home . Mr . Lettow will locate in Del Norte , Rio Grande County , Colorado , on a large ranch that covers many hundreds of acres . Mr . Lettow said , in a conversation with the writer , that his favorite hog was the Berkshire and knowing Mr . Lettow as we do It adds a great deal to the significance of this statement . Mr . Lettow attended the Agricultural College of Wisconsion and he has made a careful study of all the popular breeds of hogs bred in the United States . The herd he bought from the Lovejoys consists of ten sows and one boar . Seven of these sows are by Masterpiece Climax , one of the few really great breeders ali...

Food for Thought . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 November 1910

Food for Thought . When you stop to think of the cost of nominating your boars and sows , and then compare the first cost with the benefits you are sure to reap from the Futurity Shows , the comparison is just as marked and out of proportion , as the old slow-plod-ding ox team and the modern mile-a-minute automobile . The cost Is nothing as compared with the good you get from having all your litters eligible to show in the 1911 Futurity Shows . Today—now—nominate your boars and sows . To the Editor ol The Berkshire World , Dear Sir : —I have been studying Berkshire problems for the last five years and during that time have read most of the journals that make a specialty of swine husbandry , in the attempt to find one whose editors and correspondents were disposed to deal fairly with the reader , but find that all of them are given to the grossest exaggeration on those points that are most interesting to an inexperienced breeder . The experienced breeder knows what rates of discount ...

HEART TO HEART TALKS WITH OUR ADVERTIS -ERS . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 November 1910

HEART TO HEART TALKS WITH OUR ADVERTISERS . What Should I Include in My Advertisement ? Before discussing this important topic , the writer wants to have you go back with him for a few minutes and review some of the topics that have already been discussed , under the foregoing heading . In the August issue of this paper , the value of putting a price on the article that was to be sold , was explained , and many breeders immediately profited by this . It stands to reason that any man who is looking for something will naturally want to know the lowest price for which the article or stock can be bought , before he investigates further . Experience has proven to us , time and again , that a cash price on an animal or number of animals , is an inducement for their quick sale—providing they have the quality and breeding that warrants the price that is being asked for them . In the September Issue of The World , another important topic was discussed— How often should a man advertise ? Vari...
