His name was ('aider, from the naino of a neighboring stream, lie was a noble animal, very large, very gentle and playful, with an cxpressivo f;vce, huge hanging cars, a great quantity of rich curling hair, and a hm-hy tail that sometimes, when it was whisked incau tiously, brushed things off the table. Ho was very intelligent, and evidently under stood many things that were said to jiim. "We are very sure that he knew the names of many things, for he w ent to M;ek them when he was told, and brought the things named, lie seemed to feel much pride in carrying anything with which ho was entrusted, and nothing gratified him more than to be permitted to carry in hi mouth his master's snuff-box ; although, if it was presented to him open, he drew back from it with signs of great dislike; making grimaces and uttering little short bark...

Ttl WilBWA FREEFil&H. EBEN9CURC, PA., Fvlikn, Morning, - October 17, 1873. From present indications the next I State Senate will stand 20 Republicans J to 13 Democrats, and the House TO Re publicans to 30 Democrats. llo.v. James F. Bark, of the .Pitts burgh Port, has been chosen by the Democratic delegates at large to fill the vacancy occasioned in the Consti tutional Convention by the resignation of Judge Black. It seems to be admitted by the Radicals that the Legislature will 1 Democratic, which will insure the re-clectiou of Dion. Allen G. Thurman to the United States Senate. Iowa elected the Re publican State ticket by a greatly re duced majority. This priest went on a mission to America, and for some vears his labors lay in tlie wild re piotre of the far West. The mission ary led pretty much the life of the children of the virgin forests that he traversed, and where the footprint of the white man was never seen.
