Ci) 3lw gnUjj stottmu ASTORIA, OREGON: THURSDAY FEBRUARY 5, 1BS3 COXGIIESS. The present senate'stands 36 Dem ocrats and 40 Bcpublicans, including ingMalione and Biddleberger. The Kopublicans Lave won two seats in the forty-ninth senate that is to say one in Oregon and one in California. This will increase their strength in that body to 42. There is a dispute over the seat of John A Logan in Ill inois. It is not easy to calculate what is going to be the upshot of the dead-lock there. But if there should be a failure to elect, a Bepublican will be appointed by the Bepublican governor to the vacant place. The new senate will probably be called in extra session on March 5th, according to usual custom, to confirm the ap pointments of the new president It will bo seen that when party lines arc drawn no Democratic appointment can be confirmed, and no Democratio measure can become a law, should the senate determine to oppose the appointment or the measure. The political complexion of the se...

w Sfe $ gfovian. ASTORIA, OREGON: SAEURDAY FEBRUARY 1&S5 TRIAL BY JURY. Judge David Davis, in a paper read before the Illinois bar, savs on the subject of trial by jury: "The antiqui- ty of the instiution of the jury does not in itself prove that it should be retained. But it is a strong argu ment in favor of its retention, and throws the burden of proof upon those who assert to the contrarj. A system by which the concurrence of tho people in the administration of the law is required, of necessity influ ences beuefici :lly the national char acter. This is evident to every intel ligent man who compares the nations who possess it with those who are without it, It is conducive of self government, which is the basis of our civilization. The sense of respon sibility ot the-community is increased when each individual in it is informed that if qualified he may be called up on at any time to discharre the im portant functions that devolve upon juries. This requirement of qualifi cation ...

en Site gattg storiatu ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY .FEBRUARY 8. 18S5 COLUMBIA SALMON IN NEW YORK. A bilii has recently been intro duced into the New York legislature making it necessary for manufactur ers of canned goods to place on the label of each can the date of pack ing. The intent of the law is well meant, hut its adoption is unneces sary and would work a hardship on the canners of the Columbia river without securing a single advantage to the consumer or any one else. The bill is presumably based on the as sumption that canned goods deterio rate with age, and that each succes sive season lowers the value in a sani tary point of view of the canned salmon, meat or fruit The supposi tion is not borne out by facts. Salmon that is well put up will remain sweet and wholesome just as long as the air is kept excluded. There is on a shelf within reach of the writer a row of cans of salmon put up in 1880, nearly five years ago. A short time ago one of the cans was opened and its con tents f...

RJ Sfa gaiti storfatt. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY FEBKUARY 10, 18S3 CHOOSING A PRESIDENT. Sixoe 18G8 the discussion of the question "How shall we choose our president?" has engaged the atten tion of the public press, In the North American Jicvieio for Febru ary, five different writers discuss this subject of electing the national execu tive and their ideas are worthy of notice. The writers are President Barnard, of Columbia college, "Wil liam Purcell, the Rochester journal ist, Roger A. Pryor, the eminent at torney and Senators Dawes and Vance. In tho preparation of their respect ive papers it is evident that these writers traversed the same ground, but widely varying conclusions were reached. President Barnard, for in stance, holds that the electoral col lege, ''useless as it has become as a piece of machinery, is at least har m lcss; and an amendment that should stop with its nbolit ion would do noth ing to avert those grave evils and even serious dangers which, as ex perience has p...
