nflmv (Bounty gqmMif an SAVANNAH, MISSOURI. CURRENT TOPICS. A TEititniLK calamity occurred iu Brooklyn, N. Y., on tho morning of tho 7th. Ttio homo for aged people, con ducted by tho Catholic society known as tho Little Sisters of tho Poor, took fire nt an early hour, and tho south wing of tho building, which waa occu pied by 72 of tho nialo inmates, ranging from C8 to 105 years of ago, was burned to tho ground. Upon tko alarm of firo being given, the inmates of tho building were panlc-strlckon, and a terriblo scene ensued. A number upon tho up per floor woro bed-ridden and paralyt ic, and being unablo to make their es capo were either suffocated or burned to death. Eighteen lives in all wero lost by this most distressing calamity. The Tresidcnt has tendered the va cant War Secretaryship to Judge Tuft, of Ohio, and tho latter has accepted the appointment. I mako my own yeast to raiso my bread with, and will tell you how first, and then, after you have oneo tried it, I am sure you will not uso "bakers' yeast" or any other kind. It will bo no trouble to make it after the first trial. At noon, when the potatoes aro being prepared for dinner, boil four or five medium-sized ones extra for yeast. When well done, mash up lino with a large iron spoon in a deep earth- j cn bowl, the samo as used for mixing cake. To thoso mid one and a half cups sifted llour, and one '.ablcspoonful salt, and stir together with tho potato while hot till quite fine. Pour over tlds suffi cient boiling water to scald tho llour, and make tho mass tho consistency of cake. Pendleton ap peared before Iho Committeo on tho War Department on the 14th, and ex plained his connection with tho Ken tucky Central Hailroad, and with tho collection of ita claim for transporta tion sorvlcos. Ho testified that ho was paid by tho company 50 por cent, of tho amount recovered througli his agen cy ($148,000), and also received about 16,000 additional, to bo paid by him to A. H. Hansom, who assisted in tho preparation of tho claim. Ho testi fied with great emphasis that ho never paid ono dollar to any person connected with tho Government, or to any membor of Bclknnp.'s family, or to any ono clso, except to Hansom.
