KINSLEY, GRAPHIC. KINSLEY, KAKSAfl CURRENT COMMENT. Fob many years Spain has collected lo Cuba an annual tax of $10 on every fowling' piece. ' John Wahajiaker, the ex-postman ter-general, it was announced at Phila delphia, is a candidate for the United States senate. A pocket typewriter, no larger than a watch has been patented, on which a speed can be attained much faster than s person can write by hand. Secretary Carlisle, in his recent report, recommended to congress that neither greenbacks nor national bank notes should be issued in denomination? of less than $10, the object being to extend the use of silver dollars and silver certificates. It appears from statistics compiled from reports during the civil war that there were 278,644 desertions from the union army. In a laree majority of these cases, however, the offense was merely technical and came properly under the head of "absence without leave." The latest scheme of the Clan-na-Gael, which catno to a head in New York a shor...

Tai.es or the OLD MOSINEE TOM. Copyright, 1894, by Bacheller, Johnson & Bacheller.l In the late fifties the Wisconsin val ley above Portage was a wilderness. The lumbermen who trailed their way up the river passed through tamarack ;swamps so thick a deer could scarcely penetrate them, and over dry ridges 'clothed with splendid pine without ; underbrush, clean as a park and of in estimable value. i Old Mosinee mountain rose out of the ridegreen reach of the valley, dark with his robe of pines. All about was forest land untouched by the ax, al most un traversed by the pioneer's rest less foot. , , But year by year the loggers pushed northward, seeking points where the pine trees could be felled into the river, or where skidways could be constructed to make hauling unnecessary. The ;whole river had been ransacked and 'every favorable river point stripped of ;its timber before the movement back .into -Abe .forest began. From short 'hauls, and heavy timber the movement Iwas toward lo...

Every saloon yawned like a crater and Tittered noises like the mouth of hell. Laughter was loud, and now and then the shrill convulsive whoop of a drunken lumberman rose above the c lamer, the trample, the clatter of passing teams and the braying' of tin horns. All the county was in Mosinee. The Ripupagins had assembled for the parade, and the Dimblebats were there to look on and jeer. It was the day after the presidential election. Sew York had been carried, and that set tled it. The parade was hurried for ward at once, and preparations for speeches and bonfires went forward simultaneously. Very littl...
