YACHTING. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 23 July 1885

YACHTING. The San Francisco Yacht Club will have a fishing cruise next Saturday and Sunday, leaving here on Saturday afternoon. After a short cruise around the bay the boats will anchor at Quarry cove, Angel Island. On the following day the yachts will make some evolutions by signal, under the command of Vice-Com-modore Gutte, and with favorable weather there will be large number of visiting boats to witness the maneuvers. The following are the orders issued for the cruise: Vice-Commodore's Orders, } Number the First. } Get out your fishing tackle, and buy your bait. We are all going fishing —all hands of us. Come over on the 1:30 ferry-boat to Sausalito, Saturday, July 25th. The yachts will leave that place when the ViceCommodore sets the proper signal -- if he can find it—and take a sail around the bay until 5 o'clock, when they will rendezvous at the Quarry, Angel Island. Everybody must then try to be "high hook," and catch all the fish possible. At 8 o'clock on Sunday, when the ...

CEMETERY MEETING. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 23 July 1885

CEMETERY MEETING. Another meeting of citizens for the furtherance of the cemetery project was held at Workmen's Hall on Friday evening last. Some fifteen or twenty representative men of the town were present. The special object of the meeting was to hear the report of the committee appointed at a previous meeting to canvass the community in the interests of a public cemetery. Four members of the committee reported individually, that it being generally understood that the Land Company would not carry out the proposition made by one of its members at the last meeting, it was useless to solicit subscriptions. Therefore nothing definite had been accomplished. Mr. J. E. Slinkey the chairman of the meeting stated that he had received, in writing, a new proposal from the Land Company which he thought more definite and satisfactory than any they had previously made. The company offered to sell five acres of the proposed site for a cemetery for $1,500 cash and would donate $500 of that sum t...

SOCIETY. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 23 July 1885

SOCIETY. Society is glad to note this week that there seems to be a disposition on the part of our visitors to ignore the supposed set dates for closing the season, as they are loth to leave our charming little village by the sea. We had almost despaired of attempting to keep up our social column but have changed our minds this week and hope that it may always be an interesting department of the paper. The foolish noition with a few of desiring the suppression of their names from lists of those present at social gatherings has been dispelled, and we look to all to contribute what they can to our mutual enjoyment and to this department. Mine host Col. Slinkey promises to keep up his most enjoyable monthly hops, one of which is to be given next Saturday evening, and our jolly good "sailors of the sea" will give their occasional receptions aboard ship. We are pleased to note the progress of our Reading Circle as evidenced at its meeting last night at Mrs. Cobb's. A most enjoyable eveni...

A JUGGLER'S LUCK. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 23 July 1885

A JUGGLER'S LUCK. Frank Naoni Wins Fifteen Tliounaiid Dollar*. "Look here Frank," said Ike Marks, the stage manager of tin 1 Vienna Gardens, "I've got a coupon of the big Louisiana drawing; don't yon want to buy it?" The man addressed was Frank Naoni, a juggler and balancer, well known to j the patrons of the variety theatres of this city as a neat perform*! and a. nice little fellow. lie was generally set down on the bills as "the celebrated equilibrist," and really the way in which Naoni played with unwieldly objects and seemed to ignore the very exigence of a centre of gravity was quite remarkable. Naoni looked'at the lottery ticket coupon, remembered the number of times he had played and lost, hesitated a moment, thought he would have one more try and bought it. He tucked the coupon in his vest pocket, with but a glance at the number, which he read an 51,100, and then forgot all about it. This occurred about the Ist of the mouth and on the 16th the extraordinary drawing took pla...

THE SUICIDE MANIA. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 23 July 1885

THE SUICIDE MANIA. Ilore Lives lost l>y Scl"-St«aght«f Than by Any Other Single G'ir.isn. Disastrous m the present year promises to bo to human life, it is questionable whether it* record will not eventually show thai more lives have been lost by suicide than by any ether single I cause, so far at least as this country li concerned. Human life is not only held cheap by the lower and more brutal elements of society, but the regard for it seems to have lowered so rapidly that self-murder is now perpetrated upon the slightest provocation and for rea- sons which sometimes are absurd and often grotesque. It is never possible to obtain the exact number of suicides ao> cotnplished in a certain lime, as many Nt them are not reported, but an :ip- proximate Idea of their rapid Increase may be obtained from tho number reported in' telograph, and these, since the Isl ni lasl January, foot m> three hundred ami seventy-eight, which is nearly r hundred more than we...
