Dr. Jones' Eastern Mail, will leave town this morning for Independence, via. Salt Lake. Single copies of the Californian can be had at the office, enclosed in wrappers — price 12 1/2 cents. To Our P\trons.— lt has been customary from the earliest period in newspaper history, when a public journal changes hands, for those who assume its charge to make a very polite and obsequious bow to the public, setting forth in ; lengthy terms and high-; sounding periods, their views and intentions • for the future; and making all manner of good promises, which after being once penned and corrected are never thought of again. The impression which remains upon tho mind after reading one of these editorial valedictories is very faint, consisting of; a confused recollection of such words as "independent," public spirited," "principles, not men," "contrast to former course," '.«« consistent," &c, &c, which expressions are very easily transferred to paper, and, properly punctua...

For the Californian. [Newspaper Article] — Californian — 17 May 1848

For the Californian. Mr. Editor, -- Permit me through the medium of your paper to make a few remarks in relation to the official acts of our Alcalde. I learn sir, that he has located the seat of justice for the great valley of Santa Clara upon the market square in the Pueblo, and has bought a large adobie house on the west side of the square for a jail, for which he has promised to pay some five or six hundred dollars; and that he is now making arra ments to erect a court house on the said square, which will probably cost $1800 or $2500, -- and if a good one, much more -- He has also ordered a re-survey of the town, for which is promised some 5 or $ 600,--thereby entailing upon the people a useless and dead expense of at least $ 3,700, without a dollar in the treasury -- or if any, the amount is very small. He is thus squandering or wasting a sum almost half sufficient to erect for the people a good court-house, when they ascertain where to put it. There should be strong protection ...

Tickled by the straw of flattery, .delighted with every rainbow tinted bubble that floats Upon the wave of time — as antic as n young coon in the moonlight, and as merry as a cricket, she dances in the sunlight of joy, and seems to use every endoavor to coax ill male, moody mortals, into brighter and hapi»ier paths. So mole' it he! i ' iMHt'IIMBMahMIIBMMMnnMMHiI I Shall we have Slavery in California? — This is a question which we often hear asked. In an article which appeared in our Jast, under the head of "the judicial organisation," we briefly adverted to the subject of slavery as being one of the principal obstacles to the immediate extension of the U. States territorial laws over California. We believe that we echo the sentiments of the people of this country, when we assert that slavery is neither needed or desired here, and that if their voice could be heard in the halls of our national legislature, it would be as the voice of one man "rather than put this blighting curse upon...
