HIGH TREASON. WHAT IT REALLY MEANS. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Stock Journal — 5 September 1919

HIGH TREASON. WHAT IT REALLY MEANS. Mr. Arthur Lynch, M.P. for West Olaro, who during the South African War fought on the Boer side as col>~ onel of an IriBh brigade, was the last man to be tried in England for higb treason. He was found guilty and sentenced to death, a sentence which was subsequently commuted to penal servitude. Ultimately Mr. Lyncll was granted a Royal pardon, and duly entered Parliament. One section of the Act of 1848 specifies that certain act3 of treason^ including "compassing to move any foreigner to invade the King's do* minions," shall be treated as felon' ies. Such an act would be known ad "treason felony," the maximum pen alty being penal servitude. It is a remarkable fact that the inj dictment againBt Mr. Lynch was framed under a statuto of 1351. pass ed during tlio reign of Edward III. That old Act still holds good in its main clauses. Previous to that, the law regard ing treason was very vague. Murdor, highway robbery, piracy, evon charg ing the King...
