Walpeup Races. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 4 April 1917

Walpeup Races. There was a splendid attendance at the annual gathering of the Wal peup Race Club on Wednesday week, and mostly, the crowd had reason to be satisfied. The program of events offered owners was particularly rich, but the entries were by no means commensurate, while curiously enough, punters had no choice of ringmen wherewith to deposit their flimsies, there being only one mem ber of the bag fraternity present The officials were all at their posts, and the whole of the events were got off to exemplary time. Through some extraordinary mistake, the dis tance for the Pony Race was altered from 5 furlongs an the published pro gram, to 6 furlongs on the official card, and this caused the only dis sentient note all day. There is no doubt that the error lost the race to Five Crown, and the owner naturally felt annoyed. A remarkable feature about the events was the times re corded, and we would suggest a care ful measurement of the course prior to next meeting, for such times as...

Ouyen County Court. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 18 April 1917

Ouyen County Court. At the above court on 8th ult., be fore Judge Wi-nneke, Olive Stratton (Don) sued MIcCleland, Barber and Co. (Thompson) for £16 16s, over charge for commission on the sale of her farm at Tiega. The evidence of the plaintiff, supported by her hus band and Albert Joseph Allan, of Galah, farmer, showed that there was a district arrangement that de fendants were r to charge half com mission, and in settling up full com mission had been charged. Defen dants maintained that the arrange ment about half commission was only in connection with the sale to a pro balle purchaser found by the plain tiffs, and which was not completed. Mr. Pickering, the ultimate pur chaser, was called for the defendants, but he was only interested in .the price paid and did not know any thing about the rate of commission. His Honor, in giving his decision, said that he-was much impressed with the evidence of Mr. Allan, and on the whole he thought that the evidence supported the plaintiff. Ther...

Mildura Yelta Rate. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 18 April 1917

Mildura Yelta Rate. In the "Age " of Saturday there appears an article of which the care ful reading will make a number of people blink considerably. It is headed "Local Railway Rates," and appears on page 17. The second paragraph mentions the full list of lines constructed under the "defi ciency rate," and included in this are the Mildura to Yelta, and Ouyen to Kow Plains lines. The concluding sentence says, "In April, 1912, be fore most of these lines reached the operating stage the 'deficiency' rates were generally abolished, and as a matter of fact no moneys represent ing the proceeds of these rates were ever paid into the railway revenue by the local construction trust." Nowhere is an assertion appear Sing in, what it claims to be, the most widely circulated paper in Aussralia. If no moneys have ever been paid into the railway revenue, where has the mooey gone which the Mildura Yelta Trust has collected? And where is the money which the Trust is now collecting and seeking to co...

Local and General. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 18 April 1917

Local and General. The current accounts due to us having been sent out, we would again request that you attend to yours promptly. It may save a heap of trouble. Walpeup shire council meets at MurrayviIle on Thursday week, 25th inst., when the business is sure to be important. A recent plain and fancy dress ball at Underbool returned a nett profit of S4 4/, which will be equally divided between the local hall and Ouyen Hospital funds. Let 'em all come. In connection with the latter move- ment, a collection is now being taken up in the Tempy district by Mr. J. Frawley, who has been authorised by the committee to receive and acknow- ledge donations. East side residents, and towns people generally, will be interested to know that in the near future a postal box will be placed in position at Ouyen railway station. This will be a big convenience, more especially as the hour for closing the mail at the post office is now curtailed on three days a week. =f ? . k--=', -_*i . . .. . . . . . ....
