Womanhood Suffrage. [Newspaper Article] — The Dawn — 1 July 1891

Womanhood Suffrage. SINCE our last number the Womanhood Suffrage League has held a General Meeting at which its orneen and council were elected. Lady Windeyer was elected president, the Hon. W. H. Suttor, M.L.C., and Mra. Wolstenholme, vice-presidents, and Miss Manning, treas urer. Eighteen members of Council were selected by ballot and the following ladies accepted office as honorary secretaries, viz : Miss R. Scott, of ?'Lynton," Point Piper Rd., Woollahra, and Mrs. G, Montefiore, of 77 Darling hurst Rd. Correspondence relating to the League should be addressed to the secretaries and the il- subscription which constitutes anyone a member of the League may also be sent to them. The public meeting held at the Y.M CA. Hall on Monday 8th June was robbed of half its attendance by a wet and stormy night, still there was a good audience and when the meeting broke up the petitions in favour of womanhood suffrage were largely signed. The speeches were briefly reported in the Herald of 10th...

Hints For Sewing. [Newspaper Article] — The Dawn — 1 July 1891

Hints For Sewing. It saves a great deal of time io have all the tools and materials for sewing at hand before beginning. Keep an abundance of needles in different lengths and sizes and thread of all kinds. It pays io buy the cheap, fine basting cottoe, which can be bought for one hulf-peimy per reel. This basting cotton is not ou ly cheaper, but it is fine and not as tightly woven, and therefore better adapted to its purpose than thread that is better made and costs more. It is not fit for any other purpose however. Never use any coloured thred for basting, as it often leaves a stain. A long slender needle is the best for ba'ting. No person can learn to fit well until she learns to baste well, using moderately short, even stitches. In removing basting threads, always clip the thread, HS pulling the thread stretches the garment out of shape and wrinkles it, and on velvet fre quently leaves a mark. The finishing of a dress is the most important part. Nothing is more unsatisfactory tha...

HOUSEHOLD HINTS [Newspaper Article] — The Dawn — 1 July 1891

^ÍOUSEHOLD I^INTS ^S^* -¡ JAINT--It is best not to pal on new paint over old -giDt that is soiled or greasy. BUSINESS WOMEN. [Newspaper Article] — The Dawn — 1 August 1891

BY ONE OF THEM. . fOME time ago in a leader in The Daivn it was shown that the char ges of incessant talking and the babbling of secrets so commonly IA made against women, could not ? /f( be justly made, and that the men \- who so readily belittle the sex share our foibles in an equal degree. There is another theme on which men often wax contemptuous, namely, as to a woman's ability to earn a living or do any business in the accurate, successful, methodical way which, of course, characterises the sterner sex. This charge also seems to me unjusti fied. I should not say anything of the busi ness abilities of women if I had not a consi derable experience of this prosaic side of life ; an experience which has shown me that women in business make money go fur ther than men, are more cautious, economi cal and persevering, moreover, they are always civil and they speak to the point and do not waste time. I have been told by a Han of large experience that when a busi ness is in a hazardous ...

Fuchsias. [Newspaper Article] — The Dawn — 1 August 1891

. Fuchsias. " Fuchsias are much benefited by being watered overhead once a day in a moderate temperature, and twice a day in extremely hot weather. In summer they should be put in the shade, but not under a tree. Sun in the morning or evening does not hurt them ; but mid-day sun in summer is too scorching. There are several winter blooming varieties that do well in the house. These must not be allowed to bloom in summer. Fuchsias treated as directed above, become a mass of bloom and continue their blossoms during the warm season. [A vital point is overlooked in this item, namely, the neglect to note that the watering overhead in the house should not be done when the sun is on the plant. A strong large-hole syringe is the best for watering, so that the water may reach every part of the plant.]
