"BRAINS SUPPLIED HERE." [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 3 June 1914

"BRAINS SUPPLIED HERE." Is it possible to provide the feeble minded with more 'brain until they are normal? Wild though the possi bility may seem to the lay mind, it ha.', nevertheless, been seriously dis cussed at the Congress of Medicine in Paris. Furthermore, experiments in the Ecience which is known as "or ganotherapy" have already been at tempted. This science really consists of treat ing diseased organs with medicines made from similar organs. It is point ed out by medical experts that the building up or doctoring of one organ with extracts from a similar one was practised 2000 years ago, although, of course, in a very crude fashion. It is on record that patients suffering from an affe tion of any particular part of their system were given the same part of an animal to eat, with the idea of repairing the local waste and dam- ; age. Thus consumptives were order ed to eat sheep lungs, while for dys peptics was prescribed a diet la whlcli the stomach of calves ranked as the chief...

SPEECHES MADE TO ORDER. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 3 June 1914

. SPEECHES MADE TO ORDER. A little, quiet, book-lined office in the heart of the West End of London is occupied by a Eentleraan who is prepared to turn out speeches for all occasions. During a recent interview the speechmakcr-in-chief remarked that, while speeches have often been written by others than those who de liver them, he thinks his is the first attempt to concentrate the supply and to establish the new profession of gentleman speechmaker. 'I am as ready with an after-dinner speech as any other," he said. "They can be bright or serious as required, and I have already prepared a good many speecnes which have been de livered "with success in different parts of the country. 'Impromptus' are a specialty. "The method is simple enough. I ask clients to supply me with any lo cal allusions they require, and an idea, if they have one, of the trend of the speech. The rest they can leave to me. I have made a practice of attending all the functions T could for years past, so I know exac...

THE POULTRY YARD. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 3 June 1914

THE POULTRY YARD. The fowls love an occasional dose of charcoal. Wheat and oats in rotation make a good feed. Sprinkle dry ashes or dry earth un der the roosts frequently. Change the dust bath every two weeks; it will help keep the fowls free from lice. Sprinkling the hot ashes from the coal stoves under roosts will aid in keeping the fowls free from throat and lung troubles. There is no advantage in allowing the poultry to tramp around in tho snow. Better keep them confined while the weather is bad. In putting eggs aside to keep for setting care should be taken to keep at as even a temperature as possible; they should be turned regularly every two or three days. Lime water is not only a good cor rective of bowel disease, but is also a good remedy for soft shelled eggs. Keep a supply convenient where the fowls can help themselves. One of the most important items in setting hens early is to have tho nests warm and dry. Make them tight and set them in the warmest part of the house, an...

,'A PLACE FOR HIS HEART." [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 3 June 1914

,'A PLACE FOR HIS HEART." "I married you in order to love you in God and according to the need of my lieart, and in order to have in tho midst of the strange world a place for my heart, which all the world's bleak winds cannot chill, and where I may find the warmth of the home fire, to which I eagerly betake myself when it is stormy and cold without " Can you imagine whose words are these? Perhaps you might say they were written by some lovesick senti mentalist; but you would mistake. They are found in the "Love Letters of Prince Bismarck" which have just been published, and from their am ple pages you could cull a hundred similar passages. (There are many different judgments- of Prince Bis marck current in the world to-day, but there cannot be two opinions as to the purity and depth of his affec tion for his wife. Probably she was the greatest single force that ever entered his life. She does not seem to have been an intellectual or a brilliant woman, but she was clear-minded, sens...

ALLOWANCES. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 3 June 1914

ALLOWANCES. Au excellent idea, and one that is steadily growing in favor, is the cus tom of allowing quite young girls a fixed sum for their small current ex penses, permitting full liberty in the expenditure, but requiring a strict ac counting in a business-like form at stated periods. No better method could possibly bo devised to teach the true value of money and instil, cor rect business habits; and practical financial ability will not come amiss, whatever the future lot may be, whe ther as a wife or a member of the maiden sisterhood. Not that the mat ter of mere saving is so important, but the systematic habits formed in this particular will have an undoubted effect on all the other habits as well. There are a number of young ladies in this city, belonging to wealthy families, who manage property and with marked ability. The father of one of these presented her, on her twenty-first birthday, with the deed of a house in the business part of the city, on the condition that she wou...
