MYSTERIOUS DEATH. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 24 October 1912

MYSTERIOUS DEATH.   On Sunday afternoon last at about half-past three o'clock, Constable M'Carthy was in- formed by a young man named Robert Wills that a man was lying alongside the Werribee River with his throat cut. Con- stable M'Carthy visited the scene of the tragedy and found the man as described. He had the body brought into Werribee, and on the following day had it removed to the morgue. The constable tracked spots of blood from the place where the body was found to the river and back. Close to the body was a swag, its contents being strewn about the bank, but no straps or cord- ing for holding it together could be found. Another peculiar fea- ture is that no razor was dis- covered in the vicinity. Inside the vest which the dead man was wearing was a note signed " Albert Arnold, Pirron Yallock," stating that a certain city hotel was poisoning immigrants, and that the police should get an analysis made of a bottle of brandy which was in the swag. On the cloth side...

NOTHING SERIOUS. THE PARSON AT SEA. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 31 October 1912

NOTHING SERIOUS. THE PARSON AT SEA. Clergymen occasionally tell stories at their own expense. In a recent assembly of ministers, one of the number said that in addressing a trr tain mission meeting, which wti4 at tended chiefly by sailors, he ha'l sought to adapt his remarks t?-. his hearers by using nautical simil:s, and In doing so he had ventuoredi be yond his depth. "I had employed," he sail, "the figure of a captain navigating his ves sel through a narrow, winding chan nel, abounding in rocks and strong currents. I described the details lold difficulties of the voyage with ns much cloquence as I could, and repeate? some of the Imaginary captain's or ders to work my audience up to aR line suspense. "Then, with the ship in the most imminent peril before the roa's, I called out : 'And what shall we io ? What shall we do ?" " 'Bless yer soul, capt'n,' a u.iltor in the audience snng out, 'you can't do a thing, for you're going starn foremost.' "

DOUBTFUL SUCCESS. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 31 October 1912

DOUBTFUL SUCCESS. lMuch excitement was caused a ew weeks ago in Calcutta by a particu larly insanitary and evil-smelling tank suddenly changing to a perfum ed one, giving oil a refreshing smell of lemon. To the natives this portended the coming of a great Indian goddess, who would arise out of the water, so the pilgrims gathered in thou sands to have their sins washed a way and their diseases cured. A rn ther guileless pouth also had been selling this water at five rupecs per bottle, which is equal to 6e 8d. But soon after it was discovered that a large consignment of essential oils, belonging to a firm of perfum ers close by, had got smashed, and afterwards leaked into the tank. The natives now feel rather uncomfortable at thbb thought of lhaving drunk the dirty water. It Is to be hoped they will know the smell of holy water next time they meet near a perfum er's works.

WERRIBEE AGRICULTURAL SHOW. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 31 October 1912

WERRIBEE AGRICULTURAL SHOW. The sixth annual show of the Werribee Agricultural Society eclipsed all previous ones in point of attendance and number and excellence of exhibits. Owing to the continued dry wea ther the outlook was not a promising one, but an energetic secretary and willing .committee can work wonders, as was the case in this instance. The show was a well conducted one, and the visitors were loud in their praises of the management. The Werribee show stands head and shoulders over similar exhibi tions of much longer growth. In a few years there is no doubt that it will stand on the same plane as the leading shows in the State. In fact we have heard those whose business ne cessitates their attendance at ex hibitions such as held at Werri bee, that barring the Royal Show that it is the best in the State, its horse stock especially- being I commented upon. .Viaitors from. all parts of the State were pre sent.
