YANKEE YARNS. A RUSS ON THE RACK. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 18 February 1891

YANKEE YARNS. A HUBS ON THB RAOK. We had last week on the train a style or passenger common to this free country, says Wm. Nye. He was a Russian by birth, nnd had made some money in this country by a happy accident in the price of rays or the sudden advance in old clothes. Doubtless in his old home across tlm ocean he had slept at night on aheap of straw, and eaten the brunette bread of the plain people. Here he had made money under the fostering care of our free institutions, and rode in a sleeping car. Vulgarity had early marked him for it* own, and so, even with a silk hat and al overcoat with a fur collar on it, one could see that he would be more at home sleep ing in the loft of a livery stable with hit whiskers full of barley straw. lie found fault with everything, and is half an hour had won his way to tht hearty and cordial hatred of every One in tho car. He asked me what I paid for my berth to San Francisco. I told him, but I told him idols., less than the pric* because he ...

THE BARRISTER'S TEA. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 18 February 1891

THE BARRISTER'S TEA. ' , The reign ot politics is temporarily sus pended and all sorts of social questions, small and great, are lifting up their heads for a season'. Among tho rest the great ' tea ''question' is having its sharo of publio regard. Sir Andrew Clark, a considerable authority, puts his trust in ' five minutes' tea,', or tea infused exactly five minutes with boiled water. But the medical profession has for once been beaten on its own ground, and a barrister carries off tho honours of the day. Tho gentleman in question, following up a . succession of correspondents in a daily paper ' describes a method of making tea which we know to be practically oneof the best possible. It secures the full strength and pure flavour of the leaf without extracting more than the smallest minimum of the undesirable tannin. ~ This is the barrister's easy, artless, and in expensive way : Put the kettle on to boil ; when the water absolutely boils fill two tea pots, containing no tea, with it...

Sin, — Can you or any of your numerous readers Inform mo if It In usual at country l'ost and Telegraph oltlcea to bo expected to wait fi to 20 minutes for tho official to tnko a message (telegraphic), nnd is it not rather behind the timus to bo kei-t waiting from «r- to 40 minutes for tho delivery of tho daily mail ? Such a state of things exists at Stanley at present. However, if a suitablo piece of land could bo selected and Govern ment willing to purchase and erect thereon a Post and Telegraph ofllce, the writer .will willingly subscribe ten guineas towards the cost of same, and believes a few other residents will also subscribe a similar amount. As Stanley is now of sufficient Importance to claim an ofllce, -ml an oflicial. apart from that of a storekeeper's or other place of business, the writer trusts that some abler pen than his will bring the matter before tho proper authorities for reform is badly needed. New Catholic Church, Burnie. (TO THE EDITOR.) [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 18 February 1891

~Xew Catholic Church, llurnle. (TO THE EDITOR.) Sin, — In tho statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with tho above church published in your issue of Saturday last, the sum of £115 is given as tho result of collections by Father O'Callaghan and Mr. Thos. Summers, to which a voucher is annexed, signed 'J. W. Norton-Smith,' certifying that this nmount had apparently been banked. By this it would appear that the collectors had satisfactorily accounted for that sum whereas the principal item In the list, £8fi/9/8, January, 1887, was result of a third bazaar not referred to at nil in the statement, and £7/8/0 same date proceeds of scuond concert in nld : neither sums having anything to do with collections. I can speak positively for I banked tho larger sum myself and gave Father ? O'CallaRhah tho lessor ono to bank, and was present when lie did so. The collections therefore amount to only about £21, instead of £115. Yours, etc., John Mylan, Co-Trustee Bazaar Fund. . Burnie, ...
