To our heathen forefathers the mid-winter festival was, as in the Christian Church, one of tho great events of the year, and tho cutting of tho mistletoe ono of its most solemn cere monies. The Druid priests marched in pro cession to the oak trees, and cut down the golden plant with a golden hook. It was to them desecration to touch the mistletoe with any commoner metal, and should it by accident touch the ground the virtue of the plant was lost. With it these heathen priests made precious decoctions, which they believed rendered all animals fruitful, and a powerful antidote for all kinds of poisons, as well as a charm against sickness, misfortune, and evil spirits.' Their name f...
