A CONSIDERATE COUNCIL. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 25 May 1914

«? .??».??.-? ? ????_ .... . .,. ,? .-. - . - ^^ f . . ,irt. a...-, A CONSIDERATE COUNCIL. Beaudesert (Q.) has a considerate council. Not having an engineer of its own, and desiring some engineering work done, it recently decided to engage the services of a qualified engineer. This was un usual consideration for the ratepayers for a start. Next, when the engineer sent in his plans, etc., the council appointed a sub-committee to see if they were satisfactory. What other body of ratepayers has such a con siderate council? It might be pretty rough on the engineer. But Beaudesert Council only believes in engineers now and again and then, apparently, they are to be watched lest they err.

"AN ENGLISH INSTITUTE." [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 25 May 1914

'AN ENGLISH INSTITUTE.' A member of the Institute of L.G. Engineers of Australasia has advised having received a copy of Avhat appears to be a circular letter from the Presi dent of the 'Institution of Municipal Engineers.' ' It is suggested to the engineer that he should be come a member of the English institution, and the President, we believe, has promised to find him a proposer and seconder in the event or his acquiesc ing in the suggestion. The institution in question is stated to have been founded in Britain in 1908. and from what Ave read in the English press at various times regarding the conditions of the profession, we should say that it should not have an idle, moment if reform be its objective. But why it should endeavor to rope in Australasian engineers, as it is apparently doing, is, to quote the daily press, 'a matter for conjecture.' What good can any of our engineers derive from membership of an institution so many 'thousand miles away, and with apparently little 'o...

A Letter from the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 25 May 1914

A Letter from the Editor. America has always been a wonder T. world in my imagination. The great deeds of great men in that wonderful country of 'make haste' seemed always ? to summon me to 'come across' and people my wonder world with reality. When the news came through from time to time of the great achievements at Panama, and then the decision to erect the greatest skyscraper on earth in the Woolworth Building, I packed my first trunk. But just at that time the great chance came— the chance of producing 'Build- ing' Magazine and its associated journals by my own entire staff, working my own plant, and more in accordance with my own ideas of the fitness of things. My wonder world vanished. I un packed that trunk, keeping it well in view, and took off my coat again. That is only eighteen months ago, but in that brief time, with a great deal of personal labor packed by the loyalty of a staff trained to my own ideas, and the unfailing support of you, my friends of the Com mon Ground,...

HOSPITAL GROUNDS. Liability for Taxes. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 25 May 1914

HOSPITAL GROUNDS. Liability for Taxes. Two interesting decisions in respect to the rat ability or otherwise of lands used in connection with a public hospital were given at the Ryde Muni cipal Appeal Court (N.S.W.) recently. The Ryde Home for Incurables is located on 42 acres of land, which are comprised in one block. On the opposite side of the road the trustees acquired an acre block. The council assessed 40 acres at £5000 and the one acre at £500. The point at issue was whether the land, being used in connection with a public hospital, could be rated. Mr. Palmer submitted that the exemption from rating only applied to a reasonable amount of land surrounding the buildings, and not for all the land that might be owned by the institution' or used by it in its maintenance or in connection with its business as a hospital. He quoted a decision in the case Goddard v. North Sydney Council. The Magistrate : The trustees consider the 40 acres necessary to the institution. How can I say how...

THE DRAYTON DEVIATION. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 25 May 1914

THE DRAYTON DEVIATION. The news that the preliminary Avork of the Dray ton (Q.) deviation is being pushed along is true this time. It has been on the Arerge of being started since separation in the early fifties. It became one of the formalities of every Parliament — like the reading of the Governor's speech — to mention the subject during the address-in-reply. Boys of the district Avere told of the line that AAras to be-some clay, and they told their sons, and so on through four generations. Noav that the Avork is really in hand people are thinking it's a mistaken announcement, or Parliament has been misreported, or something.
