Oakleigh West Progress Association. Enlargement of Scope. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 23 January 1915

Oakleigh West Progress Association. Enlargement of Scope. A i'eneral meetini of the above was held on Tuesday evening in the Congregational Church, Kan garoo road, Mr Hy. J. Lee (Pre sident) in the chair. Cr Davey reported that the Town Clerk had written in re town-plan ning lecture. Apologies for absence were re ceived from Messrs Lake, Morgan and Clough. The President said that for some time past the Association had not "caught on" as it should. It had been started with t~he .conviction that such a society was needed, and had done good work in the past. Statements had been made that .it was decidedly a political society And run in the interest of one party. He gave that an- em phatic denial, and whoever asser ted that it was a political organisi tion did not speak the truth. It was unsectarian and non-political, formed purely for -the good and welfare of the tatepayers. THE BOROUGH LIGHTING CONTRACT. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 23 January 1915

TIE BOROUGH LIGHTING CONTR&CT. To TH" EmTi~OR. Sir, - Tue co~tact' for street lighting expires~n the 1st June. It behoves the conuncil to see that the ratepayers get the advantage of the competition of: the electric light supply, so as to. get more light at a cheaper rate. Ratepayers should watch the action of Councillors, with a view to getting the best value for the least money., Seeing that so many small up-country towns have now the electric light installed, I don't see why an up to-datesuburb shou!d be a hun dred years behind the times. Yours faithfully, A. R. BUNNY.

Teachers' Summer Schools. It is said that il tihe past his~tory of Pentridgec an tnthusias-:c warder spent annually his only vacation in the Melbourle gaol, picking up hints for the betterment of his future work. The analogy is rather unfortunate, perhaps, but at tie present time hundreds rf State-scho'A teachers are at work under various experts, in imita tion of thie uld-time warder, pre paring thlrmselves for even better work in the fn:uture in their noble prof~ntion.. There is no gaol at mosphere in the centres, but there is, undonbtedly, an air of cheerful, persistent hard work. P[rvsaCL" TRaIrNING. - There are two summer schools. Oakleigh West Progress Association. (Continued from last week.) [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 30 January 1915

Oakleigh West Progress Association. (Continued from last week.) Cr Davey stated that the Coun try Roads Board could not take over that portion of Dandenong road from Warrigal road to Poath road, as it was part of the City of Malvern, but a petition was being prepared for Malvern to come into Oakleigh, when it would g.et a contribution from the Board like the other portion ot the Dandenong road from Warrigal road to Box Hill road. There are only 2 7 signatures in the area and over 13 of them had already been obtained. That portion would come into the West Ward, the smaller of the two, equaling it with the other wards. He did not think Malvern would object to the severance. Mr Hubbard: As regards the lighting of Carlisle crescent, Dal ston and Earlstown roads each have a lamp and there is a long da-k space between. There should be a lamp midway between the two. I move that a request be made to the council. Seconded by Mr Masterton and carried. Mr Waite: Before we joined the Borough of...
