POWER OF LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLIES. Some years ago, there was a great contro versy in England as to the power of the Hou-e of Commons, to commit to prison for contempt of its privileges. We were present dtir'tog the debates and proceedings in (his remarkable case, which arose in this wayThe Inspectors of Prisons* found in (he .cell of one of the prfsoners in Newgate an infamous book, which bad been pub lished by one Stockdale. They mentioned this fact in their " 'Report'* to the Govern" ' Blent, which was priated by order of the House of Commons. Stockdale brought - an action against the Messrs. Hansard, the printers of the Report, which they printed in their capacity of printers to the House of Commons. .The Hansards applied to the House; and were ordered not to plead to the action. Lord Chief-Justice Denman . gave judgment, by default, against the Hansards, who were mulcted in £600' damages.
