PINS. Cum grauo salis. [Newspaper Article] — Hawkesbury Chronicle and Farmers Advocate — 17 June 1882

PINS. Cum grauo salis. Two coast journals are having a little kick up, undone of 'ein tlie " Bega Gazette," goes in thuslv:-" It has been said that "whom the gods would destroy, they first deprive of reason," This is amply verified in the case of the unfortunate biped who does the organ grinding in Ohurch-street. Writhing, and fuming and foaming, and blowing like a stranded whale, or a muzzled hyena at sigltt of a fchin of nie.it, he returns again, '"1 ke the dog to his vomit, and the sow to her wallowing in the mire." Poor William, we pity you, but we cannot follow your lead. It is just possible that you may mean well, but there is filth in the track-it must be all your own. '"That we are " illiterate" is our misfortune ; and is not to he wondered at, as we did not trradulate on the classical banks of the Der- went, nor at Billingsgate, under the renowned mother Moriarty, nor have we sounded the profundities of Joe Miller for elephantine jokes, but "We have a scalpel, and a quiverf...

FARM AND GABDEN. [Newspaper Article] — Hawkesbury Chronicle and Farmers Advocate — 17 June 1882

FARM AND GABDEN. Ax AGRICULTURAL CREED.-The following " agricultural creed " is given in the Rich- mond. Plantt r a¡<d Farrne. r ]» Do not culti- vate poor land. It is a feeble mother which, eau give no sustenance. 2. If your land is poor, you« must limit the area of cultivation to your ability to manure-let it be ever so little -and you will be the gainer by it. 3. Ex- ert yourself to produce manure on the farm. Such manure is the Hour that makes the loafr and a commercial fertiliser is only a leaven to it. Home made manures cost some labor but little money, while commercial fertilisers will bring you in debt, and are a kind of food which mother earth cannot entirely rely and fatten upon. We are not their enemy, but active friend, when judiciously used, and can be had without too great a strain on the far- mers' credit. 4. Bring to the aid of your manure pile green verdure of grass, from which live stock can be fed. 5. Keep as much stock as can be well-ied ; for this add...

Poetry. CHARLES DARWIN. Coiao up higher cried the angels to the Science I King of earth, Down the airy void of space t'ieir summons j came, LTere we give the recognition o" thy labour gloried worth, 1 A¡.J a statue passing any earthly fame. Ah! the time is scarcely past yet wheu the big ots down below, Refused thy genius, homage, and forsooth. Religioui-lv- re-'iled ther, as Religion s forein..st foe, While thy giant soul was soaring into T ruth ! Let praters nurse their bigotry-their bitterness in peace, In their little, petty-paltry spheres, Enter thou the cairn Valhalla where all workers find release îvo longer banned-exalted now-and, Prince 'mid noble peers, Shall thy name be held in honour down the alon of the vears.
